A Colorado mother filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday after police shot and killed her son upon mistaking him for an active shooter.

On the day he was shot in June 2021, Kathleen Boleyn's son, John Hurley, pulled out his gun and went after suspect Ronald Troyke after Troyke was accused of ambushing and fatally shooting Officer Gordon Beesley, court documents obtained by Fox Television Stations have reported.

Troyke, the documents noted, had "a virulent hatred for the police."

OMG this is so sad and so dysfunctional. A potential mass shooter who just murdered a police officer is killed by a Good Samaritan and his CCW probably saving “many” according to the article who is then promptly shot by a cop by “accident” and killed.

I’m getting a little sick of these good ole boys police departments sticking up for each other after Ulvade and well as Parkland for that matter (the DA said he won’t prosecute the Killer cop who shot the hero as he was clearing the rifle of the psycho).

I hope the family gets millions.

It is an old rule, but still valid, that when involved in a self defense shooting, take care not to meet the cops with a gun in your hand.

You might get shot.

No good deed by a private citizen on behalf of the Oligarchy [Gov’ts] goes unpunished.

e.g. - Trying to save kids in Uvalde would get you kilt by all of the various Stasi on site.

They don't know you're the good guy. They only see the gun.

How does plainclothes cops survive encounters with uniformed cops they don't know?
Is there a secret hand wave or something?

Bullcrap. When it happened, the department clearly and honestly said what happened and called him a hero. Nobody ran him down or said he should have minded his own business.

It was a tragedy, and the local cops referred to him as a hero.

There have been cases of undercover cops getting shot, and even getting shot and killed, by uniformed officers.

For example:

And you’re an ignorant ass to put quotes around “accident”. Are you suggesting the cops deliberately murdered him for some reason?

And he was a hero, but he made a very stupid move to pick up and start manipulating the killers rifle. Had he simply covered the guy when the cops arrived, he likely would have been ok. And it’s CCW 101 not to have your gun in hand when cops arrive. Undercover cops are well aware that is an exceedingly dangerous move.

“How does plainclothes cops survive encounters with uniformed cops they don’t know?”

If at all possible they try not to have gun in hand. They identify themselves immediately with whatever the local lingo is. And they live by the iron rule, the uniformed cop is the boss... they do exactly as they command with zero argument.
To do otherwise is to court disaster.

It’s akin to a recon patrol returning and making contact with a friendly perimeter. Very very deadly if done wrong.

Yep...At times it's even dangerous for other LOEs to arrive at a shooting scene.

I’m saying the cop likely over-reacted and pulled the trigger too fast. I also say it’s much like the police stations we’ve been seeing lately who commit outrageous acts of incompetence then hide it.

The DA actually praised Brownlow for shooting an innocent man. Good ole boys club to the core. As the defense was saying he shot without even a warning and wasn’t acting in a directly threatening way.

Save your insults, my opinion is as valid as yours.

I believe for NYPD there used to be a color of the day. Don’t know if this is still done.

Please note reports indicate the cop shot the guy from behind, without warning, and after clearly seeing the nutcase that was going to use the rifle. Smells like cowardice on the part of the cop, to me.

No haven’t you heard? police never make egregious mistakes. (sarcasm)

Wish my retirement equaled Scott Petersons after he stood outside the building cowering in fear while Cruz killed 19 High schoolers. What is it? Almost 9000 a month?

I once knew a guy who was with DEA. He said that if they were undercover, it was coordinated with local cops with joint management. Any cops on the scene would know there were undercover agents around and how many. It isn't a 100% guarantee, I imagine.

Sometimes they don't. Those stories do not get published very often.

There is specific training and the equivalent of a "secret handshake" for that particular scenario (careful and slow presentation of credentials). It is still a risky situation. The basic minimum is to disarm immediately and submit to arrest once the uniforms show up.

That part is the same thing that civilians need to do if they are still hanging around when the uniforms show up.

Remember, "No good deed goes unpunished". Your weapon will most likely be confiscated as "evidence". You might be arrested, regardless of the circumstances. Do not argue with police; there is no point to that, and it can only make things worse. Call your lawyer right away and don't make any statements to the police.

The best plan is not to be there in the first place.

This one also happened in CO just up the road from my mom. My son and I saw more cops speeding to the scene just after we heard the shots.

There is no situation that occurs that the police won’t make more dangerous.

Can I shoot some random dude in a police uniform with a gun? No. Ok then. Why don’t they face the same punishment?
