Way back when a Frenchman invented attaching the shoes to the pedal for improved performance. He called them PEDALS OF DESTINY, the riders called them, the pedals of death.

I am fairly confident he’s been using toe clips for some time.
He just didn’t quite get his right foot all the way out and lost his balance. The issue is, he should still have been able to maintain his balance because he had his left foot on the ground and he was stabilized by gripping the handle bars. He’s a clutz.
