I think that was the year an avalanche buried 17 people on Rainier. No, that was in June of 1981... The Ingraham Glacier icefall fractured causing an avalanche that killed 11 people. A wall of ice 300 feet wide fell 800 feet and shattered which caused the avalanche.

Ok...had a friend who lost his best friend in that avalanche...he convinced me to cancel my plans to climb the mountain in 1982.
