Prejudices that led to witch-hunts still affect women today, says historian

Lucy Worsley, whose BBC TV series focuses on powerless people, says women continue to bear brunt of men’s rage

Prejudices that led to witch-hunts hundreds of years ago have not disappeared and women are still on the receiving end of men’s anger, a leading historian has said.

Writing in the Radio Times, Lucy Worsley, a historian and author, said: “[Although] we like to think we’re better than the people who hunted witches, witch-hunting still happens in some parts of the world today.”

The prejudices that led to witch-hunts in the 16th and 17th centuries continue to exist and women, especially outspoken ones, were still targeted by men, she said.

She said: “The prejudices that led to witch-hunts haven’t completely disappeared. It’s still the case that women – especially odd-seeming, mouthy ones – often feel the anger of the men whose hackles they raise.

“Today, ever so many people, but perhaps women in particular, feel a sense of kinship with our ancestors who were persecuted in this way. Anyone who has ever been put down as a ‘difficult’ woman hears a distant echo of the past.”

The historian’s four-part series, Lucy Worsley Investigates, takes a closer look at the experiences of people who “lacked power in the past”, with one such example being Agnes Sampson, a Scottish woman who was accused of being a witch and burned at the stake in 1591.

On International Women’s Day in March, the first minister of Scotland issued an apology to the 4,000 people in the country, the vast majority being women, who were convicted and often executed under the Witchcraft Act of 1563.

Sure. Uh Huh. Women are an oppressed minority. That’s why all the men are always bossing all the women around and why all the TV commercials feature stupid women who need to be rescued by their highly intelligent husbands. Perhaps a larger role for women in politics and in business boardrooms would help to alleviate the oppression?

sadly, many women attack other women just like men might attack women....

eg....a woman gets raped and immediately people want to know WHY she was out that late, what she was wearing, how many boyfriends does she have, and finally WHAT DOES SHE LOOK LIKE to determine if her claims are valid....

I disagree.

There are a ceriain % of women who are in fact witches.

Well today you can substitute a B for the W.

For example Amber, pimilla, aoc, hillary, dr jill, my x-wife etc.

To be fair there are a lot of men like fauci who should also burn

These professional rabble-rousers spend their days and nights thinking of new reasons for victimization and new topics of discrimination to fulfill their need for self-righteousness. They are mentally disturbed, and they are in control of the asylum.

Just think how sick you’d have to be to think up stuff like this instead of living a normal life. Pretty damn sick.

4,000 women “didn’t have power.”

Cry me a river. How about the 40 million casualties in WW I who didn’t have “power” to stop them from getting killed? How about the 80 million who perished in WW II who didn’t have any “power” to stop the war? How about the 150 million killed by communism in the 20th century who didn’t have any “power” to oust their murderous, despotic governments? How about the 60 million babies slaughtered in the womb by uncaring women?

Let’s assume one third of war casualties were women and half of communism and abortion casualties were women. That’s about ONE HUNDRED FIFTY MILLION women slaughtered in the 20th century alone.

So we are supposed to get our knickers in a wad over a measly 4,000 who perished due to witchcraft? Give me a break!

“to determine if her claims are valid...”

Unfortunately, people (women included) are not so scrupulous as to never make false claims of victimhood, so in crimes in which there are often no independent witnesses, or indisputable evidence that a crime has even taken place, people have to be skeptical, and actually ask such questions in an attempt to determine if the claims are valid.

The alternative is either to “believe all women” (even the liars), or “believe no women” (even those telling the truth). I think you’d agree that neither of those alternatives is a very good one.

I always suspected that those accused of witchcraft were of the liberal wiccan bent we see today.

I have a much greater respect for witch trials now.

Given that this is the BBC, a thought comes to my mind about the "Rotherham Grooming Scandal" (1980s-2018) and associated scandals where these criteria expressed by Ms Worsley were present. EXCEPT that these experiences were NOT in the past but in the very recent present! While the above citation mentions 47 girls/young women, in the further investigations, more victims have been found, so does that not count for "people who lack power"?

I point this out as evidence that there is still the great hunt for ancestor guilt, ESPECIALLY white and male and western, at least as this article from the far LEFT Guardian has it. Not having seen any of this series, it could be that Ms Worsley will find oppressors in other cultures but as this is the BBC, I have my doubts!

American women don’t know how good they have it here. Just look at the way islam subjugates women. One example was Bibi Aisha, a girl from Afghanistan who had her nose and ears cut off by the Taliban for running away from her abusive husband.

That is heinous, however...

Are we to believe all women, all the time?

People are know to lie when it is in their own interest. A close friend was charged with rape when the girl he had been dating - who arranged the “event” - had regrets after the fact and accused him of rape...two weeks after the fact.

It seems that her sorority sister had dated my friend in high school and there was bad blood between them. “You had sex with HIM?” and in her defense, she changed the circumstances of the evening and made it all HIS idea. In the retelling, he became more and more aggressive until, two weeks after the fact, her and her friends had turned him into a rapist and she filed a report with the police. Fortunately for him she had left him notes about her plans for the evening and how excited she was. There were also witnesses to their “courtship” leading up to the night. Between all that, the charges were dropped.

It didn’t end there. This was a large, popular sorority and they stood by their sister. If he had a class with one of the sisters, they would refer to him - in class - as “Rapist”. He ended up transferring out at the end of the semester.

To reiterate my point, people lie. Justice should be a search for the truth.

Unclear which category the author fits in.

The only witch hunts going on today are the two Trump impeachments and the Jan 6 hearings in the House.
