I live in a rural area in north Texas, and people around here hang coyote skins from their fence posts. Always thought that was weird, but whatever.
I don’t understand why those folks in that neighborhood haven’t fed that coyote a piece of lead instead of food.
we used to decoy coyotes using dogs in california, moved to missouri and still decoy coyotes using dogs after furbearing season is over. It is so much fun to sit in a chair and a dog will draw the coyotes to 15 yards of my gun easy shot. We also have coyotes come to our treeing dogs and fight with them...all great fun and excitement
Neighbors have been complaining about the coyote before the attack.
Several years ago now, I was in the metroplex north of Dallas (in west Plano, I think), and had pulled into a grocery store parking lot to park and make a phone call. Mid-morning, around 10:00. Some motion caught my eye and I glanced up to see an adult coyote emerge from an overgrown, unkempt empty lot next door and trot across the grocery store parking lot. As I turned my head to watch, he descended into the landscaped drainage ditch area that ran along the front of the grocery store tract.
That drainage area tied in to a 30" culvert that runs beneath the divided street, leading straight into a large subdivision and winding greenbelt area. Yep, straight into the drain pipe went Mr. Coyote. Lots of Dallas neighborhoods have bike paths and walking paths, which allow easy access from the still undeveloped fringes of the area, right into residents' back yards.
I used to hear the 'yotes at night, yipping in the greenbelt area near my house. They've since gone quiet... there is now a large bobcat presence in the area.
Atlanta suburbs are lousy with them.
This is the bleeding heart PETA’s fault. No hunting... No trapping... Depleting their own natural resources...
Cause and effect.
Ever heard them “chirp”?
Thanks for the ping, you stay cool... and pray for rain!
They might be hybrids (with wolves), if they display wolf behavior (packs) instead of coyote behavior (solitary). Might also explain their size.
In north Jersey they used the term “coy-dog”, but it is suspected that they might be wolf instead of dog hybrids.
The ones we have here in Maine and Connecticut are coyote/wolf hybrids, but there are also some pureblood gray wolves running around as well.
As would most people when a child has been attacked.
Good to know.
It’s supposed to scare other coyotes away.
That’s a good point; they certainly looked like wolves and were in a tight pack.
“..Coyote attacks in the middle of Dallas? Welcome to Texas - it can happen anywhere in the state....”
Yes Sir!
People that move here need to understand that. Same with rattlesnakes, etc.... One can find em anywhere, I mean ANYWHERE.
I live out in the boonies. We’ve got it all back out here; coyotes, coons, cottonmouths, gators, rattlesnakes, turtles...you name it, it’s probably not too far off from here.
I’ve shot about 15 coyotes over the past year or so...all confirmed kills. I just load em up in the tractor’s front end loader, head on down the path that leads to the bayou and dump em in. When the gators hear that tractor coming, they know lunch is on the way. By the time I get to the edge of the bayou, they’re lined up in the water near the bank right where I dump em out at....vicious, but amazing creatures they are.
BLM/ANTIFA types would be like an ice cream dessert to these old boys...lol.
FWIW, coyotes absolutely LOVE small dogs and house cats.
I’ve personally witnessed em run, full gallop, jump right up on a back patio with people sitting there having a conversation, snatch the house cat right there in front of em and gone with it without even slowing down...and before anyone could even get up out of their chair. I hate the darn things.
In the not so far away future, we’ll do the same with Communists. [it’s a message to the others]
most of my hunting is at night and alone. heard them things make all kinds of wild noises. So many animals making noises do not think i have heard a chirp. They will follow us at night once the season has been open for a while and eat the skinned game we drop, and will sometimes come to bother the treeing dogs. Yell at them or fire warning shots they usually go away. Can tell when they are real close i have a male dog who will not hunt out if they are to close. It a weird dance raccoons, yotes, dogs, and I. Dogs and I are game keepers for a large private deer and quail hunting preserve, who’s owner i have never met
Sounds like a terrible job for a hunting man... lol :)
I grew up on a ranch and we trapped and exterminated a lot of coyotes and cats when they started taking down calves.
But they have a unique tool they use to try and coax domestic animals out to them away from safety. They will make a chirp sound that sounds like some kind of animal you have never heard before. Kind of like a loud bird or squirrel.
It makes domestic animals, wild animals, and even humans curious enough to walk out away from safety and take a look to see what it is. Pretty unique sound that definitely raises curiosity. Many have probably heard it but never knew it was a coyote making that odd chirp sound. :)
And the real strange thing is, because of the pitch of the chirps, it will only give you a general direction. But when you get closer you cannot pinpoint exactly where it is coming from because it is bouncing off stuff from all directions. The only reason I found out was because I was lucky enough to actually see one hiding under a bush making the sound back when I was a kid. I really is kind of unique.
What the hell was a 2 year-old doing on the porch unattended? These are the same type of people who move into bear country and feed the bears-even though there is a huge fine for doing it-then they cry and whine when their pets, their kid, themselves are attacked-I live in a remote area-we have coyotes, mountain lions and now-bears, too-and we have some ignorant people who moved here from cities and think it is fine not to secure their trash in a heavy container-and even to put out food for the coyotes.
The animals were here first-If you are not willing to listen to the game warden who says don’t leave your pet out alone, don’t feed the predators and secure your trash, then you are endangering not only yourself but your neighbors, too-and that is not cool...
