Ego's ZTR IS the Electric Lawnmower to Beat Out Gas WE LOVE THE POWER AND VERSATILITY of gas-engine mowers.
But after decades of testing them and many more decades of using them, we're also keenly aware of their shortcomings: noise, smell, numerous hot surfaces, oil changes, tune-ups, and mechanical complexity. Electric mowers look more inviting with every passing year. But can they really go head-to-head with gas machines? And, more importantly, could they even be the better mowers?
We now have a lawnmower that answers "yes" to both those questions. This spring, outdoor power equipment manufacturer Ego rolled out its ZT5207, a $7,000, 52-inch battery-powered mower that does more than cut grass. It takes aim squarely at the frustrations that people have with gas-engine models and particularly with range anxiety-the concern of whether a battery mower can finish a large lawn without running out of juice. The company rates the ZT5207 as being able to mow four acres on one charge. To do so, it equipped the machine with six removable 56-volt lithium-ion batteries, each a massive 12-Ah power pack. Its rated run time is two hours at slow speeds or about 100 minutes at its top 8 mph.

3 weeks ago, I bought a Toro gas push mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine because the mower and engine are Made in the USA.
I could not find an electric mower made in the USA. They are all Chinese, it seems.
If anyone knows of a battery electric mower that is Made in the USA, let me know.
All I have is a Troy Built with a 165cc engine. I have used smaller electric mowers and they have no power, Though they are fine for small lawns.
My old Troy Bilt had a 195cc engine. This really wacked down grass and mulched leaves. For what you can buy at Lowes and HD... It seems that 165cc is as high as gets these days.

I hate gas powered lawn dodads for all those reasons. Have only battery powered weedwackers, edgers, hedge clippers, leaf blowers. Have all the same manufacturer so can use common batteries. Would love for the riding mower to join the club but am not paying double.
Stihl makes them in Virginia Beach. All their stuff is Made in the USA. They’re sold mostly through independent hardware stores rather than the “big box’ centers.

My mower is obviously gasoline powered.
While all my other lawn and trimming machines are electric via extension cords. I have one battery operated weed wacker that is too under powered.
I like the natural look.

Electric motor power is basically a function of the voltage, all other things being equal. So a 20 volt wacker will have half the power of a 40 volt one. They do make 60 volt ones, but the batteries are expensive, 3 times the number of cells in the pack unless they go for less amp hours, but that reduces your runtime.

When I retired a got rid of the large lawn and daily landscaping house with the retirement home. Got rid of the 54” deck on the John Deere but kept the bucket loader which I use a lot. Just spread 20 tons of #3 rock on the sides of the driveway. I do some weed eating now but I have tons of large rocks and some mulch by design on the side of a mountain.
Electric mower at $7k and a 100 minutes? I think not. That wouldn’t have got me through half of the other house.

I will stick with my John Deere Z535M, thank you very much.
What I want and will get in a couple years is a robot lawnmower. Just get it and forget it. No paying a lawn service. No spending time to do it yourself. Think how nice that will be in the dog days of summer.
I’m envious of those Florida retirement home guys with the beach pebble or artificial grass small front lawns.
That is the future. Ones that can return home, dock and recharge as needed, and then go finish.
Perhaps most importantly to current EGO users, they’re keeping their riding mowers on the same battery platform as the rest of their 56V lineup. Each mower holds up to six batteries.
The 10Ah batteries that come with the 42-inch model give it a potential capacity of 3360 watt-hours. Four batteries come with the kit, so you have 2240 watt-hours to work with out of the box.
The 52-inch model comes with six 12Ah batteries for a total capacity of 4032 watt-hours.
Let’s not overlook the importance of EGO’s design. By using their 56V battery and Peak Power technology, they use the same batteries as the rest of their tools. You can pop them out to use in other EGO 56V tools or use the batteries you already have to extend your mower’s runtime. You can also swap the batteries out if you have a larger area to cover than what you can get from a single set.
