Lauren Bernett, a former standout at South Fayette High School and a current star for the James Madison softball team, has passed away the school said Tuesday.
She was 20. No cause of death has been given.
The sophomore was the starting catch for James Madison each of the past two seasons, and was a key player for the Dukes in their run to the 2021 College World Series.
The news comes just one day after Bernett was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week.
“Our hearts are aching, hearing the news of the loss of one of our student-athletes,” James Madison President Jonathan Alger said in a message posted to the school’s softball website. “Lauren Bernett was a high-achieving member of our softball team and a great ambassador of JMU and our athletics program. She was a key member of our 2021 Women’s College World Series team as a freshman catcher last year.
“College athletics is great because of the people with whom we get to interact every day,” he added. “We are a tight family. We are grateful that Lauren has been part of our JMU Athletics community and will always consider her to be a Duke. We will miss her dearly.
“Our thoughts are with her family; her coaches, teammates and friends; the rest of our department staff and student-athletes; and the entire JMU community. JMU is a close community and we grieve together.”
A milder form of death.
Plain murder. They are just so evil.
It used to be that if you read about a student athlete death it was usually a summer football training heat stroke incident in 100 degree temperature, rare but it happened.
When was she jabbed?
It’s way higher than normal.
Especially male soccer players.
Since it’s Spring now, we’ll probably hear of lacrosse players dropping. Extremely high pulse rates during play.
This may have been a suicide.

Just tell us what the school policy is with respect to vaxxing? It is obvious by now that the more active sports are where the vax incidents happen. Higher heart activity breaks loose the graphene quicker. Don’t recall any curlers having vax incidents-—it’ll just take longer.

Europe was quicker on the vaccine uptake than USA, it’s why euro athletes were dying sooner, expect to start seeing athlete and other sudden deaths tamp up here. Fauci lied people died.
Did enough NCAA bball players survive to finish the tournament of 64?
Very sad.
I must be cynical because my first thoughts were (1) vaxx did it or (2) murdered by some illegal or early release felon.
Experience will do that.
