“Bikes with the shaft drive system are so unusual”

I’d think the two bevel gears would have more friction than a chain. Can it shift gears?

Yes.

Chain drive 1-4 % friction loss.

Shafts about 20-25 % friction loss.

Unless it is easier to hide battery powered motors in the shaft design????

Now the gear shifting may be more continuous with the shaft design, kind of like a CVT transmission. But is that worth the friction loss?
