The county is blue because there are 21k Ohio University students voting there and a couple of thousand more faculty. Take that out of the equation and it is as conservative as the rest of non-urban Ohio. You want to find poor or working class people in Ohio who are still Democrats you have to go to someplace like Youngstown and even that is changing. Pretty soon the Dem party is going to be reduced to a few dots between the two costs, mostly college towns and some urban outhouses like Chicago and St Louis.
I’ll say. They haven’t caught on yet that the Democrats are no longer the party of the working man. They haven’t been for quite some time. They are the party of globalist bi-coastal elites (and wannabes) and some minority grievance groups.
As for the working class and the middle class.....the Democrats HATE them - most especially if they’re White.
Renters do pay property tax via their rent payment. They may not know that, but they do.
When I moved here, I was told the Monroe was the poorest county in Ohio. But while Monroe still has nominal Democrats in county government, it went heavily for Trump, and helped elect Republican Bill Johnson as 6th District representative for the last 4 or 5 election cycles.
So maybe that’s how we lost the “poorest county” title.
Renters pay the property taxes of the owners. Rich liberals will buy a piece of property and sell small parcels to other liberals for minimal cost. Unless of course you want a minimum value to vote, let’s make it a dollar more than your property is worth.
Read the article. Ohio University (not OSU which is in Columbus) is by far the largest employer in Athens. And it’s a big party school and one of the most liberal schools around, so I’m sure that’s the reason. Most normal folk in Athens County are rational conservatives.
Actually apartment dwellers do pay property taxes indirectly with their rent payments. A smaller slice of the share but they pay too. So if they want to ‘sock it to the rich landlords’ in voting for higher taxes for them guess who gets to pay higher rents? It costs to be dumb and stupidly manipulated by leftist class warfare agitators.

Most democrats don’t know why they’re democrats, and the only thing they know is that their parents and grandparents were also democrats, and so, they’re in fear of voting other than what the family has always voted. Yet, if they examined what’s best for them and their family, they would come out looking like republicans on most issues. Fear of the unknown, which is exactly how the democrat party wanting them to think and vote.
Happened within my family too, were my mother and sisters hold republican views, yet, they continue to believe that it’s democrats who have their best interests at heart.
Ignorance and lack of research, is why most democrats are still voting like democrats. Who in their right minds think that, for example, members of the ‘squad’ have the best interests of the American people at heart?
Vote stupid, eat shit. Sometimes there is no cure for some stupid and this county proves it.
OU grad here also. I remember going to the grocery store in Athens and seeing locals use food stamps for their groceries, then peeling off a few twenties for cigarettes, beer, etc. Poor life choices, indeed.
