Factors associated with nonresponse to FMT identified in IBS (Men w/Irritable Bowel and/or low Alistipes bacteria levels won’t do well w/fecal transplant)

For patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), those who are male and/or have low Alistipes levels are more likely to be nonresponders to fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), according to a study published in Neurogastroenterology & Motility.

Magdy El-Salhy, M.D., Ph.D., from Stord Hospital in Norway, and colleagues included 109 patients who received allogeneic FMT to examine factors potentially affecting FMT response. At baseline and at two weeks, one month, and three months after FMT, patients completed questionnaires that assessed their symptoms and quality of life. Fecal samples were also provided at baseline and one month after FMT.

The researchers found that age, IBS duration, IBS subtype, IBS symptoms, fatigue, quality of life, and dysbiosis index did not determine patient response or nonresponse to FMT. Among men, there were more nonresponders than responders. Compared with responders, nonresponders had lower fluorescence signals of Alistipes.

"This study has revealed that male IBS patients and IBS patients with low fecal Alistipes levels are not likely to respond to FMT treatment," the authors write. "Further studies are needed to establish whether Alistipes levels can be used as indicator to the FMT outcome."

I know fecal transplants sound incredibly strange, but they are proving to be very useful in changing, or even curing, some bad conditions.

The bacteria we nurse in our intestines changes or continues through our eating habits, coupled with any new strains we bring in. These colonies already were known for predigesting our foods, such that our colon can take the nutrients up.

Not all bacteria are germs we should get rid of. I still have a hard time reconciling that.

This study seems to show men are generally less likely to benefit from someone else’s poo.

The “Take Charge Of Your Health” Ping List

This potentially high volume ping list is for health articles and studies which describe something you or your doctor, when informed, may be able to implement for your benefit.

Now keeping a new list (“Common Issues”) for conditions expected to only concern at least 1% of the population. Ask to be on either the “Common Issues” or “Everything” list.

Please email or private message me if you want on or off of a list and of which list you desire.

Hospitalized 3 times for a c-dif infection because of antibiotic prescription for infected tooth.

Fecal transplant was next on the list but recovered before. You don’t take a pill, it is shoved up your rectum. Remember, the acids in your stomach kill a lot of bacteria.

All Fecal matter for transplant is from one well documented monitored individual. Good work if you can get it.

Not the same point but wise advice, if you have to, don’t nibble on it.

The original documented fecal translation was in a book from the 60s called the Making of a Surgeon iirc.

It involved chocolate milk shake very good idea for those with incompetent microbemes.

Another option for some with Chrones Disease. And other inflammatory gastric disorders.
