Sesame Street star Emilio Delgado, who played the role of Luis the Fix-It Shop owner on the iconic show, died at 81 Thursday at his New York City home.

Delgado's wife Carol told TMZ that the actor was at home with his family when he passed away.

Delgado had been diagnosed with the blood cancer Multiple Myeloma in December of 2020, according to the outlet, and had been in hospice care as of late.

Carol said that prior to the pandemic shutdown two years ago, Delgado had been consistently working, including the lead role in a theatrical production called Quixote Nuevo.

The Calexico, California-born actor had appeared on Sesame Street beginning in 1971, and also performed in stage shows for the franchise. On the show, he played the fix-it man who aspired to be a writer, and was in a storyline relationship with Maria (Sonia Manzano) with the characters eventually getting married.

My husband used to fly for his job rather frequently. One time he was returning home, and sat next to a man who looked very familiar to him. He couldn’t figure it out, so he finally told the man next to him that he looked so familiar but he just couldn’t place him. The man asked him if he had children, and my husband said, yes, he had a 3 year old and a one year old. Then he said, maybe you’ve seen me on TV. I play Luis on Sesame Street.

Emilio was just as nice as he could be. The funny thing was, he was coming to town for the Sesame Street Live show at the big convention center, and we had tickets for the four of us! It was even more fun because of the chance encounter.

We will always love you and miss you, Mr. Delgado! Rest in Peace!

My dad believed Sesame Street was subtle commie indoctrination of children so my siblings couldn’t watch it. (I was too old.)

It did indeed have a weird vibe as I remember it, from the early 70s. By that time, I was already out of the phase of early childhood, so wasn't part of the target audience anyway, but I would nonetheless occasionally get a glimpse of it when visiting friends with younger siblings - and immediately felt a weird vibe.

I think that it may have been because the show did not talk down to its audience - and I expected that.

It's like when you as a kid meet an adult, and that adult tries to interact with you on your level, as an equal, as an immature kid - it feels creepy.

I guess my attitude was: Look, you are a large group of adults with millions of $ in funding - you are thus entitled to "talk down" to me. Why are you all instead acting as though you were fellow kids on the block?

Regards,

In the early days of Sesame Street when I had a child who was the age to watch, I complained to my own father that Jim Henson was probably gay, because the only female main character on the show was Miss Piggy. My dad thought that was a terrible thing to say because he played golf with Jim Henson's father—LOL! The Christians in this country were so naïve until recently! Eventually Sesame Street improved the image of females on the show, but up until then, Miss Piggy was like an early version of Drag Queen Story Hour.

In the early days, before the Muppet Show, Sesame Street didnt have much in the way of leftist content. It was mostly just little bits about a number and a letter and little humorous skits (Grover cant get the sandwich he ordered) in between. The show slowly morphed to include other things as time went on so I doubt that any alarm bells had any reason to go off. The last time I had seen an episode, quite a few years ago, the show had very little of anything but propaganda. The bit I found disturbing was a cartoon called something like “World Thingy”. It was a cartoon about a anthropomorphized UN symbol that flew around forcing its version of fairness on the little creatures of its environment. Nothing like programming them while young. I didnt let my kids watch the show after that.
