Singing gay love songs once killed the careers of artists like Patrick Haggerty, whose band Lavender Country in 1973 released what's widely considered the first country album recorded by an out gay performer. Even artists who came out decades later, like k.d. lang and Chely Wright, said their careers stalled after they made their sexuality public.
Now, out queer people are some of the most celebrated country stars. Brandi Carlile and Lil Nas X are Grammy winners. T.J. Osborne, one half of the Brothers Osbourne, came out last year, the first out gay artist signed to a major country label. Trixie Mattel, who won her season of "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars," incorporates original music inspired by Loretta Lynn and June Carter Cash into her drag act. And Black queer artists like Allison Russell, Amythyst Kiah and Joy Oladokun are reaching audiences across genres.
Queer country artists are telling familiar stories -- first love, heartbreak and learning to heal -- from perspectives that were once shut out across the music industry. The sincerity and undeniable talent of country's queer performers are changing narrow ideas of what country music can be -- and who gets to perform it…

Saw him perform in Phoenix. It was a good show. The mask thing was a little weird.

I really like Junior Brown. I’m not steeped in country music but a brother of mine is and he likes to listen to him, too. Unless I’m being humored.
Country music has ebbed and flowed over my lifetime. I’d have given it up in the 70s if not for Willie & Waylon (& Emmylou Harris.) Don’t find much there for me at all these days, so I just play my old CDs.
Stafford aint gay. Stafford was married briefly to singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry, and they have a son, Tyler Gentry Stafford. Stafford was also married to Ann Britt Stafford for 24 years. She co-owned the Jim Stafford Theatre in Branson until December 2013.
Tip toe through the Tulips included?

OH! Think of the possibilities for rewriting old songs!
People see us everywhere-
They think you really care-
But then I saw you had a d—k!
Now I think I will be SICK!
Cause you’re only maaaake beeeelieve!
Seriously, if I find out they are queer, I will probably not buy their music. Too much free old country music out there. Other genres don’t bother me as much because you sort of expect Broadway people to be faggots. Like Cole Porter or Stephen Sondheim. But country music should be “pure” IMHO, and free from that sort of degeneracy.
Glad I was raised on non-queer country music!
Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys
Spade Cooley
Marty Robbins
Buck Owens.
Now C&W has gone Brokeback. I haven’t listened to C&W in 30 years.
Now I think of it, I haven’t listened to any radio music in 30 years.
Hey.....don’t forget George Strait, on that classic C&W list ;-)
“The left can’t wait to ruin country music”
You mean new country music. The old stuff is out there to listen to anytime.
“See the little faggot with the earring and the make up
Yeah buddy that’s his own hair
That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot he’s a millionaire”
Money For Nothing by Dire Straits (not country, I know)
LONG version, with lyrics
Ernest Tubb! Memories of the past.
Country Music Lover
Little Jimmy Dickens
Oh, I really thought that I had learned to love her
I even took her home to meet my mother
That’s why it breaks my heart to discover
That she ain’t a country music lover.
The trouble all started with them phonograph records I bought her
Like she thought Kitty Wells was a place a cat goes to get water
Why she even thought that Ferlin Husky was some kind of Eskimo dog
She thought The Texas Troubadours were President Johnson’s staff
She even thought that Ernest Tubb was a sincere place to take a bath
I politely disagree. C&W started going downhill when John Travolta did “Urban Cowboy “.
He was married to Bobbie Gentry.
I remember when she married some old, OLD codger back around 1970, then se disappeared from music business.
A marriage like that would be only for his money.
***My Girl Bill***
I suppose people will say Johnny Cash was the same because of his song “A Boy Named Sue.”
Married to June Carter for years. An earlier marriage the KKK tried to ruin by spreading a false claim about her.
…and Garth Brooks mainstreamed homosexuality with his incessant cheerleading. What a fag
“Ernest Tubb! Memories of the past.”
Now showing how old I am, Ernest Tubb, the Big ET. about this time on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon 60 or so years ago, TV would be Porter Waggoner (with Dolly Parton) Tubb might be a guest with a long list of others. Followed by wrestling in the Sportatoriom in Fort Worth. Here I am on FR with any music I want, any movie, drama, etc. at my fingertips. The world has changed for some ways better. Now if Putin and Biden just don’t blow it all up.
