They were way beyond their time. And, for a 3 man band, it is almost impossible to natch.
RIP Dan Pearl.
Man, I didn’t think anyone anymore would know Asia. Love them too :)
Honestly, I think there are about 4 songs I like from them. But, All of their songs are unique.
It’s funny to me seeing someone discovering an album that I bought on vinyl soon after it was released.
I saw Rush in person in 1985 and again in 2015, they are one of the few bands that sound great live.
I’d love to see this guy listen to “La Villa Strangiato” from their “Hemispheres “ album.
Reminds me of ELP.
Beginning, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer... changed to Emerson. Lake, and Powel.
Now Palmer is the only one left. Maybe Rush could re-form as Lee, Lifeson and Palmer. Think of the possibilities!
I don’t think anyone could replace the drummer... :/
That’s why a name change would be appropriate.
I second that emotion
I read Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) was positing the idea of joining up with Rush. He would be an excellent guy to take that seat, BUT....
If I were Geddy and Alex and wanted to do this, I would insist, INSIST, contractually, that Portnoy play NOTE FOR NOTE what Neil played. ONLY.
While Neil was a busy drummer, and so is Portnoy, Neil’s licks are signature to the songs.
OK, I don’t usually sit through stuff like this but that video was fantastic. This gibby guy was awesome too. Trump flag in background was a huge bonus. Thanks for the uplift in another very crappy Cho Bia Dung week.
Yeah, I love his vids.
I occasionally post the song and the lyrics. Interesting references such as Space Invaders, mind not for rent, energy traded from the friction of the day.
The original character of Tom Sawyer was much less compelling than Huck Finn. Huck had real problems; Tom invented problems. I think the song was really about Huck, but his name doesn’t match the cadence of the song.

Tom Sawyer
Rush
A modern day warrior
Mean, mean stride
Today’s Tom Sawyer
Mean, mean pride
Though his mind is not for rent
Don’t put him down as arrogant
His reserve, a quiet defense
Riding out the day’s events
The river
And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the mist, catch the myth
Catch the mystery, catch the drift
The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his skies are wide
Today’s Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the space he invades
He gets by on you
No, his mind is not for rent
To any god or government
Always hopeful, yet discontent
He knows changes aren’t permanent
But change is
And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the witness, catch the wit
Catch the spirit, catch the spit
The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his eyes are wide
Exit the warrior
Today’s Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the energy you trade
He gets right on to the friction of the day

Amen, and thanks :-)
Neil Peart
You’ll never see better rock musicianship than in this song, “Freewill” live in Cleveland. Watch from the 3:10 to 4:12 mark for some of the most spectacular playing ever. The look on Neil Pearts face at 4:12 is priceless because he knows they just pulled off the hardest part of the song flawlessly, and you’ll notice and hear that the crowd goes wild at 4:12 at what they just witnessed. I’ve seen Rush 7 times and each time was amazing. Rush is a Rush plain and simple, you either get or not.

Just too bad all that screaming early in their career pretty much shot Geddy’s voice by then. I liked Rush a lot more when Geddy wasn’t screaming like a banshee all the time.
I saw Rush at Dan’s Bake Sale in 1993 ...
Geddy was still wailing in that Cleveland video. Listen to him hit the high notes after the 4:12 mark. I like his singing whether high or low. Yes he has off nights like all singers, but dang what a band.
They were an amazing live band, too. They played all the Asia hits plus some stuff from other famous bands they were in (King Crimson, the Buggles, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer).
And have you gone back to their first two? Some of the best cover songs I have ever heard. Recently found they did videos of much of Time and a Word. Fun stuff! Have challenged others to listen to TAAW three times, listening to different instuments each time, and tell me they weren’t a great band even then.
