There are apparently occasional hints that there might still be a tiny population of these things lurking out in the wilderness.

I’d love to see the study detailing how this creature will fit back into the ecosystem.

I'd vote in favor of simply turning these things loose in their former habitat - they've probably been displaced by other predators, but humans have introduced new species into areas they've never lived in for centuries, and we're still doing it. Re-introducing a native animal into the habitat it evolved in should not be controversial.

Of course, they probably won't do this.

Camels, cats, rabbits and God knows how many other imported species fit into Oz's ecosystem.

An extirpated species would probably fit in, too.
