Probably because he wanted to be a special forces operator. Officers don't get to be the point of the spear, so to speak.
“Officers don’t get to be the point of the spear”
You probably wouldn’t want to say that to anybody who worked with Lt. Michael Murphy.

“Officers don’t get to be the point of the spear, so to speak.”
They do.
You’re probably right.
A guy I know very well gave up being an officer, as did many men in his unit, to take a shot at special forces when it was spelled with a capital “S” and a capital”F”, and they were the ONLY ones who wore a beret, as an enlisted man. He won the beret. BTW, he insists that he, and his comrades-in-arms, hated the term “Green Berets”, which they insisted was a “hat”, “headgear”, and they called themselves “Special Forces” Soldiers, or Troopers, or Operators. He joked once that, “Now, the 443rd Combat Mess Kit Repair Unit (Abn) has it’s own beret! Cream colored with
chips of beef in it!” FUNNY GUY! Or WEIRD. I still can’t tell which.
IT’S A SHAME THE KID’S DEAD. THE VAX IS THE FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MIND.
I jumped the gun commenting before I read the part of your post about “Officers don’t get to be the point of the spear, so to speak.”
Officers who are doing their job are ALWAYS the point of the spear!
Profoundly ignorant AND stupid statement. Obviously, you have no military experience. There are just many, many more slots for EM’s than Officers.
Get educated. Stupid, I don’t know what you can do about.
