The car makers get new fuel standards but may not get electric-vehicle subsidies.
Political theater can be more entertaining than what’s on TV. It’s hard not to get a chuckle watching auto makers get double-crossed by the Biden Administration after they worked so hard to promote its electric-vehicle agenda.
In the latest comic turn, the Administration last week issued new fuel-economy standards that effectively mandate that electric cars make up 17% of auto sales in 2026, up from about 3% this year. That was the day after Sen. Joe Manchin rejected President Biden’s Build Back Better plan, which includes a cornucopia of EV subsidies.
Traditional auto makers in August endorsed stricter fuel-economy rules on condition of more federal largesse. “We support the Administration’s goal of reaching an electric vehicle future,” BMW, Ford, Honda, Volkswagen and Volvo said in a statement at the time. But “bold action from our partners in the federal government is crucial to build consumer demand for electric vehicles.” The feds seem to have their own ideas of who runs this partnership.
...EPA now says that “voluntary” deal with California demonstrates the feasibility of its latest standards, and EPA cites the approving summer quotes from car makers in support of its more onerous new rules.
It’s understandable if auto executives and shareholders are upset by the double-cross, but this is what happens when business gets in bed with government as “partners.” The politicians don’t respect you in the morning.

Why is the government involved in the auto industry in the first place?

Electrified vehicles are very expensive and there is no sign that the prices will come down with mass production. Electric rates are increasing as well, erasing most potential cost savings.
The UK is considering eliminating private ownership of vehicles. This will happen here by either gov’t dictates or simply pricing vehicles out of the reach of ordinary citizens.
In the future, your vehicles will be via subscription.
Initially, you will have a vehicle and pay per mile or a fixed rate per month.
This will lead straight into autonomous vehicles where you do not have the vehicle at your residence. You will request a vehicle for X number of people or to haul X pounds of product and it arrives to collect you and take you to your destination.
The vehicles will be interconnected and centralized, so, much like your mobile phone, you will be tracked at all times. We know they will retain this information for marketing purposes, but it will be used by gov’t to surveil its subjects.
hmm... isn’t it fascistic for that to happen?
hehehe. we are all fascists now.
“Buying an electric car means never having to worry about buying gas ever again.”
A frightening future.
Global warming.
Oh, and taking the Obama bailouts. Just like with the Mafia, even if you pay them back, you're never truly done with them.
—” Auto makers profits are being driven by tax dollars and not sales.”
Very likely, but do not overlook whatever it is that allowed things like the Aztec, Pacer,Fiero... and many others into production? And the oldsmodisel! The 4-6-8!!!
Do they take stupid pills, or is it simply cocaine/booze?
Been saying something similar for years. Loved my '92 Toyota Pickup. Traded up to a Tundra. Would love to go back to something like you mention.

110% agree with your assessment. Plus, I have a Kubota tractor with a naturally aspirated 3 cyl. diesel.
Actually, it’s almost unbelievable the amount of power and fuel mileage we can get out of 6 and 4 cylinder engines right now compared to the engines produced in the late 60’s. It’s been a combination of painful integration of computer controls & emission regulations. Yes, there have been subsidies and such (both good and bad). And best of luck for the backyard mechanics to keep up with outside the normal maintenance.
From my experience in auto, the electric vehicles make sense to people living in congested areas (especially with bad air circulation like LA) & for dedicated routes like mail service & trash with stop/start patterns (regenerative braking/regular overnight charging). The well to do folk that pay a lot more will enjoy the launching from a stop the electrics are capable of. But if you don’t have a battery recycling plan or realize how horrible strip mining for lithium is, then you’re not being the least bit honest about “saving the planet”. Each person should decide after reviewing their needs and kids’ futures in mind.
