The actor, John Schneider, gives a brilliant analysis of the Alec Baldwin shooting using the same type of Colt single-action revolver. In the process, he explains gun safety, how to inspect such a weapon, and how the set of circumstances Baldwin says happened could not have actually occurred as claimed.
Baldwin probably had the trigger pulled as he cocked the hammer, which is why it fired when he took his thumb off the hammer.
This is what a mature adult handling a firearm looks like.
This happened on a movie set. There should be a video of it.
The gun will not fire unless trigger is pulled.
If Baldwin pulled trigger back prior to cocking the hammer all the way back into firing position, then let go of the hammer, he did in fact fire the weapon.
Mattel fanner 50 style.
John is aging rather well. Still very much resembles his old self and looking fit for his age. Why do I suddenly hear Waylon Jennings in my head?
The whole point of having a trigger is to release the hammer so that it violently hits the firing pin, which then sparks the primer. You have to ease it down gently if you don’t want it to go off.
He said in the interview that he had the hammer back ALMOST to cocked and let it go. Not quite engaged with the sear yet which would have held it back. Apparently firing pin had enough juice when it hit primer. Alec’s fault all the way.
My theory, and like sphincters everybody has one, is that he inadvertantly pulled the trigger while struggling with trying to thumb back the hammer one handed.
The hammer spring is very stiff, and when trying to exert that much pressure with your thumb, you have to also apply counteracting force on the grip with your other fingers. It's all too easy for a novice to include the index finger with that gripping force and not even realize it.
If he did just that, and DID NOT have the trigger pulled, then the half-cock notch would have caught the hammer. That's what it's there for.
John Schneider in the YouTube video above accidently demonstrates just that at timestamp 2:18.
Need the exact gun, make, and model.
Saying a revolver can not fire accidently is half true. Colt 1851 Navy Revolver could go off halfcocked and has.
However, I by no means think Baldwin should not be in jail now.
Standard On Set Rules:
Blanks can kill. Treat all firearms as though they are loaded
Refrain from pointing a firearm at yourself or anyone else
Never place your finger on the trigger unless you’re ready to shoot
Anyone involved in using a firearm must be thoroughly briefed at an on-set safety meeting
Only a qualified person should load a firearm
Protective shields, eye and hearing protection should be used by anyone in close proximity or the line of fire
Any actor who is required to stand near the line of fire should be allowed to witness the loading of the firearms
Funny that you posted this - I literally JUST had this exact same conversation with some guests to my home this past Sunday - using my old Colt SAA as an example.
Damn near the same demonstration as well.
Thanks for posting it.
Good that there’s a video like this that will debunk the MSM memes trying to exonerate the narcissistic idiot.
A firearm that he’s familiar with, too. Alec reads a script pretty good, and is great at pretending to be people that he’s not. But he didn’t know the gun, and neither did the “armorer” and somebody died for their ignorance.
You're welcome. It is a great demo for someone like me who is not familiar with single-action revolvers.
He handles that gun with such confidence. You can tell that this isn’t his first rodeo.
If no transfer bat ad firing pin mounted on hammer..... That’s why a lot of folks would load one, skip one, load 4. Hammer resting on empty chamber.
The folks I was demoing it to are not gun folk, either... and they INSTANTLY got it.
Baldwin didn’t check the gun, the armorer on the set didn’t check the gun, and he pulled the trigger. Pretty much period. Failure all down the line.
You or I would be charged with negligent homicide already, but since he’s psycho liberal mouthpiece, he’ll probably walk. They protect their own.
