The US is starved for computer chips. In response, TI is building a new chip plant in Sherman, TX, and Samsung has announced a chip plant in Taylor, TX, which is a suburb of Austin. It will take a while to get the plants up and running, but it is a great sign of companies seeing that it is no longer profitable to rely on an Asian provider of products.
TX has very good electric rates and no corporate income tax, perfect for chip plants.
Hopefully it is also a sign that the chip making companies see it is a national security risk to the United States, to have their plants in countries that we could potentially be at war with.
Yes,chips should be made in this country...lots of chips...of every possible variety. Yes,they might cost more than if they were made in China. But then I’d be willing to pay more, just as I’d be willing to pay more for lettuce that was picked by Americans rather than by wetback Mexicans and Guatemalans.
I think both Intel and TSMC are building fabs in the Phoenix area.
I KNOW I will be flamed for this, but Texas can thank Dubya for those rates.
While Dubya was Governor, he approved an incredible number of electric generation plants and upgrading the electric grid. While he was Gov, Texas was even selling excess electricity to California.
The Governors after him tried to appease the greenies to some extent and that precipitated the great freeze last year. It would have never happened under George Bush.
Someone is finally solving a problem, thankfully.
Amen to that.
What a NICE article to read to start my Tuesday!May God bless our republic further with manufacturing coming home!
This is very good news and I’d bet more will follow.
Speaking of which, has anybody seen him since the frankenshot booster/ wedding?
Newsom was seen yesterday.
Do you really think that was happenstance last winter? Because it seemed more to me like sabotage.
I haven’t seen any real evidence or accusation of sabotage. The changes that were made by post-Bush Governors did lower the threshold for this kind of incident.
Really, when was the last time that Texas had a freeze hard enough to shut down power plants? There have always been systems set up to mitigate this type of incident. Panhandle winters are notorious for hard freezes and most state offices know to keep that in mind.
But greenies have no clue about reality and will scrap anything that doesn’t match their fantasies.
About damned time!
As a young digital designer in the 70s, I used TI chips extensively.

Companies have reassessed political risk and are adjusting their supply chains accordingly. The problem is that this can’t be done overnight.
Taiwan Semi is also building a plant in the SW.
Finally, some good news?
I try to avoid condemning or praising a person for one act out of many they have performed over time, but...of course, that all depends on a specific action.
Along the lines of “Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln...”
