A Lithuanian man has had more than a kilogram of nails, screws, nuts and knives removed from his stomach by doctors, local media report.

He had been swallowing metal objects for a month after quitting alcohol, doctors said.

Some of the objects retrieved during a surgery in Klaipeda University Hospital were 10cm (4in) long, according to Lithuania's LRT public broadcaster.

Surgeon Sarunas Dailidenas called it a "unique case".

In its article (in Lithuanian), LRT published a KUH photo showing a surgical tray full of metal objects after the emergency three-hour operation.

The man was brought by ambulance with severe abdominal pain to the hospital on the Baltic Sea coast

Huh? Is that some kind of folk wisdom, or is the man beset with some sort of alcohol insanity?

And people just jumped to the conclusion that it was from swallowing five pounds of nails, screws, nuts and knives. These are actually co-morbidities.

One of the few in which it's probably better to just stay on the sauce.

I figured all that metal was in him due to being jabbed.

But, the stomach was the tip off as opposed to the bloodstream.

They call them swallowers. We got them as patients in the hospital, young guys usually for us Mexican, we had to put someone on to watch them so they would not swallow the screws out of the bathroom from the toilet holder in the wall. One guy wasn’t watched properly after the GI doc had already done the procedure to remove things like that from his stomach. Brought the pt back and 2 hours later he went to the bathroom in the pt room. The sitter was supposed to watch him in the bathroom, didn’t. Somehow the guy undid the recessed inset for the toiled paper, got the screws out and swallowed them. Then he removed all the plastic stuff connected to his iv and the iv and swallowed that. Totally creepy. Psych stuff.

Never saw it but there was a 1972 novel by Harry Crews called Car.

Synopsis:
The main character in “Car” by Harry Crews is Herman. He is at once a fun loving and yet rebelling against the car. Herman decides upon the ultimate adoration and ultimate sacrilege. He will eat an automobile from bumper to bumper. His inspiration is seized upon by a local hotel operator, who turns his establishment over to this historic event. A ballroom is set up for some daily performances. A coast to‐coast television contract is signed and a satellite hookup to Japan arranged.
