Oh, he was nationally syndicated.

I remember he came after “Night Flight”.

You knew you weren’t getting up the next morning when his shining face graced your color tv.

Copeland was a recording artist on the Imperial Records label, having one Billboard Top 40 hit (”Pledge of Love”, which charted in the Top 40 on April 20, 1957, stayed on the charts for 15 weeks, and peaked at #17)

In the fall of 1967, he enrolled in Oral Roberts University, where he soon became pilot and chauffeur to Oral Roberts

Copeland has been married three times

The above is from wikipedia. Looks like Ken is heavily responsible for increasing the “number of times married” percentage.

I had a class with someone who had been the organist at Scott’s church. A mild mannered musician, probably in his late 20s. He told me that he quit the job after getting beaten up by some of Scott’s other staff. Not kidding. I don’t recall the details anymore but I think it was because he had mildly criticized some of Scott’s behavior.

I detest these guys.....from Ike to Hinn to this klown and Osteen

Little Stanley is a property preacher too

And a lib

Franklin Graham

Few others really

It’s a reason I often eschew church in favor of personal Christianity

Sounds about right.

The guy is a total loon. The only thing I have to say about it is that he followed up on his promises and found a hooker that wound up running the church. And pretty well too.

God works in mysterious ways. I wonder if it was God’s plan to put her there through Genes insanity.

I didn’t know that was his wife until you mentioned it. Nor the hooker past. I had thought she must have been his daughter. The few times that I saw her I had the same impression, that she did a pretty good job of presenting orthodox Christian faith. Arguably a lot better than Gene. Certainly better than the hucksters and heretics in the tv preacher biz. Funny.

I don’t know why you would think this could be a thread of mine. Copeland and Osteen and Creflo Dollar are embarrassments to all Christians. If you think Catholics don’t get smeared with the same brush when people see Copeland, you should think again.

“personal Christianity” is incongruous — we were asked to be a community, to prayer with each other and for each other. Even the silent monks need to commune with their fellow humans every now and then

Uber Catholics here have a tendency to enjoy posting threads that denigrate what you guys collectively call Protestantism

As though we’re all so alike....which is hilarious to be honest since we are not

I never thought about Catholics till here when I witnessed this denominational chauvinism

Dude - and on the other side you have had folks like Dr. Eckleburg, Alex Murphy etc. post daily thread denigrating the church.

As to the denigrating of various non-Catholic groups - Copeland and Osteen barely really qualify as Christian. So using them to smear an ELCA or WELS member makes no sense.

I’m not one of those folks

I constantly applaud catholicism here for:

Pushing back Islam for a millennium ...without you guys blood and toil we’d be backward savages ..worshipping a meteor rather than the only deity I’m aware of who came to live and die as one of us to show he could do it then so can we...and he suffered serious pain proving it....no other saga or religion comes close to that intimacy or purity of motive and reward from the creator

Plus you christianized Rome and Greece as well as all the allemagne steppes tribes..my ancestors fwiw
.
Preserving ancient biblical texts as well as classic literature and the earliest history of Western civilization back to Megadiddo might have been lost otherwise.

Those two reasons alone justify lauding Catholicism

I don’t think chauvinistic Catholics have a decent understanding of the Protestant denominations and how disparate they truly are and you guys vastly overestimate whatever hostility prods have towards your faith....the Catholic bashers here notwithstanding ...they are an anomaly

And btw nearly all I’ve seen are ex or lapsed Catholic not born Protestants like southern Baptist born me into an extended family which is one third Catholic and my Rib’s family is half Catholic ..her mom married a missionary Baptist three war combat veteran and relented ....or surrendered more like it..lol

I have come to the point in my life I’m not keen on denominations and tend to seek preachers I like hearing give sermons

And I often get disappointed ..

At 64...my relationship has become more private and less institutional

(((((Dude))))).............cronos I thought you were older....isn’t that funny

No, you are definitely NOT one of those folks.

The problem with the bashers - of whichever side - is that they are the loudest. They then create an adverse reaction that enflames others. So a ping-pong escalation.

Good lord (no pun intended, okay, maybe pun intended). It’s time to Praise the Lord and pass the loot. Copeland is the worst example of the prosperity gospel crowd...and that says a lot.

I enjoy serious Catholic thought enough to have a copy of the Summa Theologica (Aquinas). Plenty of Catholic writers are in my list of all time favorites. Christopher Dawson. GK Chesterton. James V. Schall. Stanley Jaki. And any decent history of Europe and Christendom are inseparable from Catholic history.

The Catholic writers I enjoy tend to be rigorous thinkers and share my basic view of life. Tolkien was a serious Catholic; his defense of the faith had a profound impact on his one-time atheist pal Clive Staples Lewis. You may have heard of him.

My New Orleans grandmother was Catholic, my New Orleans grandfather was Lutheran. I was raised Lutheran but I’m certainly not hostile to my errant Catholic friends and family, unless it’s the current Woke Communist & Agent of Islam occupying the Papacy.
