According to what I read recently it's estimated that the sun's gravitation affects objects appreciably out to a light-year's distance. Who knows what dangers lurk out there?

I don’t believe there is a (distance) limit on gravity. So the Sun’s gravity carries way more then 1 ly. But the inverse sq rule is a hard master.
