The cops don’t want to jump to the obvious conclusion. Give them a couple of days to investigate, they’ll probably be able to find out what happened. If the guy is innocent, there’d be a big to-do and a bunch of lawsuits if they just arrested him.

There was a story a while back of a serial killer that returned truck to the dead owner's home.
There was a receipt inside the cab that lead to the killer's ID and arrest.

If they had a fight and parted during the trip, he might not know what happened to her. It’s certainly easy to think the worst though.
No matter how innocent one is, getting a lawyer is the smart thing to do.

Has gotten himself a lawyer and is not cooperating with authorities.
Course cooperating with any damned thing with the FBI is not in the interest in any damned thing real.
