But, screened windows, trees, and sweet tea on the front porches helps. Throw in boiled peanuts and watermelon. Most people who live here for generations are just used to it.
Sweet tea without ice?
Don’t forget, we make good use of our porches and ceiling fans. Lots of trees and brick. Everything is less expensive here so a good AC, lots of quality windows and cheap electric keep us cool. It is a humid heat but that’s what the ceiling fans inside and on the porches are for. 🌞💦
Back when kids spent all their free time outside climbing trees, making snow forts and hunting and catching snakes. (At least in my neighborhood!)
Back when you could do something stupid blocks away and your mom knew about it before you bicycled home.
We socialized back then. That is ending.
They are using Covid to stop it even more. i.e masking children. They need to see facial expressions to learn socializing. This is just sick.
You really do get used to it, I am outside most days from dawn to dusk and come inside around 11-2 when it’s the hottest - our thermostat is set at 78 and I am freezing when I come in, lol.
Throw in some pulled pork, mud bugs and some mac-n-cheese and we’ll be talking. Oh, and some shrimp-n-grits and collards and some nanner pudding. Oh and some fried chicken, gumbo, catfish and venison. Dang... I’m hungry. Mama left a couple of catheads on the counter and I know there is a brand new bottle of honey in the susan. I’m out y’all. Have a good one.
Exactly. People get use to things. Personally, I can’t stand heat. I cry like a liberal at a college protest when it gets above 80. But I can sit out in my yard and read a book when it is 20 below in the winter time. I am completely off grid so I don’t have the luxury of unlimited energy (hahaha, Californians don’t either) so you just get use to things like we did for thousands of generations.
People also paid more attention to positioning to take advantage of prevailing winds and planted trees for shade.
