My father was in the first contingent of American troops to Arrive in Britain in ‘42 on board the Queen Mary. I crossed the N. Atlantic twice on the Queen Mary and twice on the Queen Elizabeth. Once in ‘51 and once in ‘56. I was 6 & 10 on those trips. I can remember them well, too much to tell here. You may have guessed that my mom was a war bride and half my family is English. You never lived until you’ve experienced lifeboat drill in the North Atlantic in December.
Was a lovely ship. Saw it and the Goose in ‘85.
This reminds me of the poor United States. They’re still trying to save it and it has NEVER had the luxury of being a tourist attraction…so I’d think this baby would have a chance to survive.
I saw something there, out of the corner of my eye. Was walking crosswise to a passageway and saw something white down the way, and it seemed to be moving.
Stopped, took a few steps back and looked again. Nothing.
Was probably just a trick of the light?
Whatever happens to her, I hope the décor is recovered and preserved.
I once took a tour aboard the boat using one of those handheld speaker things that gave a narration. The speaker, purportedly the captain, spoke in a Russian accent, but I found it odd that he mispronounced some actual Russian words.
Sadly, Scorpion is now covered with rust and if it isn't quickly drydocked and given a thorough refurbishing, it may become irreparable.
I think there was a Haunted History episode about it.

The Spruce Goose is housed in the Evergreen Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. I have been inside it and have photos.

That makes too much sense and it is way too cheap. The ship is being held hostage by the establishment. Either citizens cough up money for and insanely generous contract so that Nancy Pelosi or her nephew Gavin Newsom can milk us dry they will destroy the nice stuff, it’s just the way it is
There is a battleship New Jersey video on Youtube which addresses why the old battleships are not encased in concrete. The New Jersey curator said it was considered then rejected because the steel ships were built to be in water for the vast majority of its life. Encasing in concrete would actually cause the ships to eventually flatten out and collapse at a faster rate than if it were in water.
I am thinking it was considered in the past by the Queen Mary operators and rejected for the same reason.
Beautiful ship. I took a tour with a historian and learned a ton. Ghosts on board? You betcha.
Just sell the ship. The Queen Mary has many fans.
The City of Baytown, where I currently live, wants the USS Texas to be moved to Baytown once it’s repair. This is foolishness. The cost of annual upkeep will be very expensive and the city is fooling itself thinking it will attract tourists and and visitors to Baytown.
It will be a financial disaster, just like the city’s financing of the repairs to the “Historic Brunson Theater”. The City is now considering offers to sell the Brunson theater. If they get 20% of the investment back, I’d be very surprised.
As is often the case, civic pride gets in the way of sound financial decisions. When you can’t get a private sector developer to finance finance a project, you know it is doomed for failure. The only exception to this rule is the USS Midway aircraft museum in San Diego. It’s one of the top four tourist attractions in California; and well worth the time and small fee to visit.

Took my parents to the Queen Mary back when they had the Jacques Cousteau exhibit + Spruce Goose...pretty cool.
I crossed the Pacific six times on MSTS 1951-1961.
On the last trip I was 13 years old.
Ben, my niece is a pretty reliable person. I don’t recall how long she worked there, but she said that all of the tour guides she knew had similar experiences.
