The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced Tuesday that it had fined a passenger $10,500 for refusing to wear a face mask during a February flight.
In a press release, the agency said that a passenger had taken an Allegiant Air flight on Feb. 27 going from Provo, Utah, to Mesa, Ariz., and allegedly refused to wear the mask properly over both his nose and mouth.
"Flight attendants instructed him seven separate times to wear his facemask properly, and each time he moved it off of his nose after the flight attendant walked away," the release said.
"When told that he needed to cooperate and provide information to fill out a passenger disturbance report, he argued with the flight attendant, refused to provide his identification, said he would continue to pull his facemask down, and claimed that it was fine just over his mouth," the release continued.
The FAA said after the flight touched down, the passenger walked up to the flight attendant from behind as she was about to open the door to the cabin and touched her, asserting that she was being "aggressive about the facemask policy," according to the release, noting that the passenger's actions made the attendant cry.
The penalty is one of several the FAA announced on Tuesday, which were taken as part of its zero tolerance campaign over unruly passenger behavior. In its Tuesday announcement, the agency said it had fined nine passengers in situations where passengers refused to wear a face mask, consumed alcohol they had brought onto the plane and assaulted passengers or flight crew.
The agency fined the nine passengers $119,000 in total, with fines ranging from $7,500 to $21,500.

It all depends on how uptight the flight crew is. Normal ones are just trying to get through the day like everyone else.
A few are cop wannabes on a power trip, determined to make sure the world bows to their authority.
Now some fines are involved I’d expect somebody to sue.
I did some checking after a flight a few weeks back. Their ‘required by FEDERAL LAW’...is....wait....for....it...
...NOTHING MORE THAN A JOE BIDEN EXECUTIVE ORDER.
Yes, let the lawsuits fly!!!!
There’s zero evidence that masks work for a virus 1000x smaller than what they can stop.
Every time I’ve put slits in a disposable mask, I can see the slits. It doesn’t matter if I’ve made them horizontal or vertical.
I remember my first flight on a large plane, a Super Constellation. Plenty of leg room. Only drawbacks were the noise & the time it took. Now..I haven’t flown since 9-1-1 & don’t intend to. Plenty of reasons not to.
These should be reversed, never collected, fans fire the idiots that set the fines.
Just suck it up and wear a freaking mask, snowflake. It is a minor inconvenience.
My flight will be on Delta. I’m hoping that it will be relaxed somewhat since people are mostly vaccinated now, but perhaps they will be more attuned to those who don’t comply. I look forward to the day when masks will no longer be required ANYWHERE. That may be in Dreamville, but I hope not.
If you aren’t going to have it cover your nose and mouth why would you wear one anyway?
And because from my over five decades as an environmental health and safety engineer in heavy industry and big agricultural with literally decades of hands-on experience with the selection and use of personal protective equipment such as face masks I'm not irrational and refuse to be forced to behave irrationally, I will not participate in the "new normal flying experience" and I will not "suck it up" until this truly inane policy is rescinded.
I'm not coming down on you personally, it's the persistent lies that have really got to me ... lies by people (e.g., medical "experts") who simply must know better ... who simply must know that what they promote is lies, more lies and damned lies! Cheers!
Oh good, then they’ll be fining John Kerry?
Oh, different laws for different classes, I forgot.
“no flights anywhere until the mask mandates are gone.”
That would be us, too.
The Mask Cult is an evil, power-thirsty cult.
Just suck it up and wear a freaking mask, snowflake. It is a minor inconvenience.

Go pound sand. You’re on the wrong site.
All this angst for an art show? If your friend is a TRUE friend, she’ll understand concepts of breathing, freedom, etc.
May your chains set lightly upon you.
Take one of the ones with a blue outer layer and two white inner layers, and carefully cut away the white layers with a razor blade. The result looks like a regular mask, but is much easier to breathe through. You can wear an unmodified mask during check-in and boarding, then switch.
I agree with the other posters who recommend not flying at all.
Was that decided by the USSC?
Of course it’s not life or death to go there. It’s the first chance my friends and I have had to meet in person since 2019. We used to see each other every year. There are 4 of us all across the US and we’ve been friends since grade school. This particular friend is having her first exhibition. She is a relatively new artist, and I want to be there to support her. That’s what friends do. It’s a time to celebrate, and in my humble opinion, time also to move ON past COVID. For over a year I’ve had to put up with wearing masks. I have trouble breathing with them on. I am fully vaccinated. The air on the planes is filtered. I would prefer to stop with this nonsense. I’m sure I will wear a mask, but I’m under no illusion that they protect me or you from viruses. Because I haven’t worn a mask for over an hour in a long long time, I’m really not looking forward to doing that again.
Be well, FRiend.
Ooooh, big bad guy, I’m a snowflake. Hahaha, love that! Thanks, Karen!
It’s the opening of her art show, that will exhibit for a month. We haven’t been together in almost 2 years. I say enough is enough.
She has anxiety and depression, and this is a big deal to her. It’s actually a breakthrough of sorts. Maybe everyone you know has sailed through CoVid lockdowns, but this has been a tough year for a lot of us.
Thanks for trying to tell me what TRUE friendship is, though. I won’t hold it against people who disagree with my definition of it.
