“Perfidious Albion”, an old nickname for Britain.
Perfidious Albion, a reference to the supposedly treacherous policies of Britain when dealing with foreign powers, translates French rhetorical phrase *la perfide Albion*, said to have been in use since 16c. but popularized by Napoleon in the recruiting drive of 1813.
It reemerged in the WWII era when it was noted that those who were embarrassing to the crown, or who were owed money for (black) services rendered, had a habit of jumping off their ship or aircraft as it was crossing over the Channel.
