#3 Southeast Gassers official race recap Part 1 of 2 Shadyside Dragway Shelby NC

Painted a 68 Camaro for a buddy of mine in FL. Bright red with Yenko style wrap around the from stripe. He didn’t need wheelie bars but ran low 10s with a 327 small block.
I don’t know how rare girl racers are. Some few years ago Hot Rod magazine did a retrospective “Women in Racing” and there were quite a few of the even way back in the 60s. I guess they weren’t winning a lot of races but they were out there feeding their need for speed.

All that trim, bumpers and the vinyl top have to go. Unnecessary weight. LOL I had to do a lot of clean up work on the tilt fiberglass front clip and carefully welded in some metal around the back glass without removing.
I did his 71 3/4 ton Chevy truck too. Daily driver with 454. Things rust different in FL so I had to weld in a whole new roof with partial window posts on and still have the glass fit back in when done. That was fun. Cab corners, inner and outer rockers, lower front door post patch panels, bottom of doors and it was a camper special that came with hooks bolted into the bedsides in four places and had tons of holes in the bed rails from the many campers it had on it in it’s 40 years that I filled in with weld. I think I filled over 50 holes with weld. Straightened the bow in the tailgate. Lotta work and it came from the factory in black inside and out. Painted the white letters on the tailgate and then found out I could have bought decals for $7.00
His wife drove a 69 Camaro.
Here’s the 71 truck; https://route66custom.com/posts/1970-chevy-c20
Thanks for that.
Those 1960-70s pickup trucks have really risen in value in recent years. See them now on Mecum and Barrett-Jackson going for huge bucks.
Assuming there’s folks out there interested in this old-school Gasser drag racing, I would strongly suggest watching this video on full screen, preferably on a large HD smart TV via its internet connection. Much better that way than on a small monitor or smartphone.
I’ve got a couple of 1950 Chevy trucks sitting here and an S10 frame ready to mount a cab and bed on. All the classic Chevies, cars or trucks are very scarce. I’ve been procrastinating on the trucks but it’s probably not a bad thing as the value will just keep going up. I should have got them done when Trump was in office and the economy was roaring but I waited and then covid came and I’m still waiting.
Not sure if I’m going to retrofit the second truck to an S10 frame or not. It’s an original turquoise truck and those were rare. Also a five window. They make Mustang II front suspensions that will bolt right onto the original frame or I could keep it original except for a dual chamber master cylinder upgrade kit. Gotta have that. I know from a honest person that it was running when parked. It’s not an oil splasher. Has an oil pump.
I’ve got a 2 ton short frame 1950 with no title. We don’t have a well yet so I’m thinking about putting a big tank on it to get water from the spring down the hill from us. Right now we’re using a 220 gallon IBC tote and it goes pretty fast. In fact, I need to fill it today. I fill a 55 gallon drum at a neighbor’s place for our drinking/cooking water. He’s got a 300+ foot well and has better water than all the other people with 100+ foot wells with limey water. Two different aquifers. The two ton has 7 leafs plus a 5 leaf overload. I think it will probably hold 3-4 tons really. Got a 2 speed rearend.
The first truck I do will pay off the 8 acres we live on and the second will either pay off the adjoining 7 acres we’re also buying or pat for a well. If I get it nice enough, it might bring in enough of a price for both.
I’ve got a craigslist search saved as a bookmark. 1976 or older with clear title are the parameters in the St Louis area. It used to give me 3-4 pages of results and now gives me 3-4 vehicles.
I paid $1,500 each for the 1950 trucks and even though they’re rusty, I could sell them for $3-4,000 each right now. Weld the patch panels in and it’s $5-6000. Go all the way with them and it’s $30-50k total. Yea, I wanna pay off the land and get a well.
During the late 1960s through the early1970s I worked at a local NHRA drag strip. Initially I worked as handicap starter…calculating and dialing in starting delays for races between different classes of dragsters. Later I was the medic for the track ambulance.
Interesting. Although I have no personal background at all in drag racing, I am very familiar with handicap horse races, where they, unfairly in my view, add on extra weight to the better horses. Never knew they did/do something similar in drag racing.
I used to have a 64 GMC one ton single tire and would like to get another one and put it on a newer 4x4 chassis. They looked way cooler than the chevies of the same years with their cheap stamped out aluminum grill. I saved the grill, tailgate, sills and horn button, everything that said GMC on it so if all I can find is a chevy, so be it.

I’ve been to that Inyokern Drag Strip.
It’s a serious part of Hot Rod history.
That turquoise color a great. I didn’t realize it was a factory color. About 25 years ago I had a red 1951 1/2 ton with a factory 4 speed on the floor. Those are cool trucks.
Believe it or not, there’s a program on right now (12 midnight EDT) on women in drag racing!
FS2 network, at least here in New York City. Have no idea if it’s on elsewhere.
The series is titled, “NHRA in 30”. The episode, “Women of Top Fuel”
