I was there. When he appeared in the home stretch, watching from the rail - he was all alone.

Never seen anything like it before or since.

Also, I hate that video of these old races are of such poor resolution.

Seems like surely someone would have had an actual film movie camera out there to capture high quality imagery of the event. I wonder if any such footage exists?

Interesting to watch the camerawork. At first the cameraman tries to keep all the horses in the frame as they head into the final stretch, but then he decides to keep Secretariat centered as he crosses the line.

Wrong. You mean the Derby.

Too much of Secretariat is all built on this single race.

But yes, a scintillating performance.

Sham went lame later. Was retired in the summer.

No, he did NOT go lame in the Belmont Stk, as some Sec myths promulgate.

Some alternate video. Still grainy but has a fairly tight shot of Secretariat on the final stretch:

A lot of people don’t realize that the horse that he was running against early in the Belmont, Sham, was one of the greatest racehorses of all time. His second place finish in the Kentucky Derby is the second fastest Derby time ever.

I read somewhere that Ron Turcotte — the jockey who rode him — said he was actually competitive, that it was clear that he enjoyed beating other horses and pushed himself to win. He didn't need to be goaded or pressured.

It sure gets a lot of attention, but I don't rank it up there with achievements accomplished by humans.

Greatest sports achievement of my lifetime:
