Americans are expected to spend about $4.7 billion on gas over Memorial Day weekend

Americans are expected to spend roughly $4.7 billion on gas during the Friday through Monday of Memorial Day weekend, according to GasBuddy, an app and website focused on finding real-time fuel prices.

That breaks down to about $1.18 billion spent on gas each day, give or take $1 million, Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, tells CNBC.

GasBuddy predicts the national average price of gasoline will be $2.98 per gallon during Memorial Day weekend, the highest price on record for the May holiday weekend since 2014 when gas hit $3.66 per gallon. (AAA is reporting slightly higher averages at $3.04 per gallon, as of Thursday.)

“Gas prices have been increasing for months due to the continued rise in gasoline demand as a myriad of destinations reopen ahead of the summer driving season. The Colonial Pipeline shutdown only highlighted how much more reliant consumers have become on gasoline since the pandemic hit,” De Haan says.

Gas prices should start to ease up after Memorial Day...

Not me. I’m sitting on my ass all weekend in my living room. It was only 49 here yesterday and rainy. It’s 61 today with a low of 41. God that global warming is killing us.

I guess $4.7 billion for a hundred gallons of gas seems too high, but who am I to complain.

Before the COVID crash, daily consumption of gas was about 370 million gallons. x$3/gallon x4 days (Friday-Monday) = $4.4 billion. So the headline says gas consumption is a little above the average long weekend. BFD!

You must be in the Midwest. I fired up the wood stove yesterday afternoon. Gotta love the temperature swings here where the cold and warm fronts collide and battle it out. Gonna be June in a couple of days.

"You must be in the Midwest."

Nope. I live in central NY State in the Mohawk Valley...foothills of the Adirondacks...about 45 minutes east of Syracuse.

Thanks. A week ago this past Friday, it was around 90. I turned on my central air for the first time this year, but it wouldn’t cool down the place. I had to call the office so they could send someone to check it. I needed freon, but they’d had so many calls that they ran out of it, and had to buy more. They didn’t get back to fill it until this past Tuesday. Thankfully, since last weekend, it’s been cooler here. I ended up having to turn my heat back on yesterday morning. This apartment faces west so it’s much cooler during the day, but then the sun passes over later in the day, and it gets hotter, and retains the heat into the following morning.

Tonight it's supposed to go down to 40. Tomorrow a low of 46...high of 57 with showers. The nights all next week are supposed to be in the mid-40's to low 50's. No higher than 75 during the day. 75 is fine with me. It doesn't have to get any hotter than that.

I paid $2.79 per gallon for gas at Sam’s Club yesterday. When I put my receipt away one from my purchase gas at the same Sam’s Club Memorial day weekend in 2020, the price was $1.79 per gallon.
