Because we are humans and in some of us, there is that drive to push our human bodies and minds to the limits. Nobody ever scaled a rock face or ran a marathon because it was easy and safe.
................................................
True that. But I wonder how many who choose to dangerously respond to that drive would do so if they were forewarned that NO S&R people would be permitted to risk their own lives to rescue them? Putting the lives of others at risk doesn’t seem to concern them too much.
I don’t see anything?
U C a lot. Tagline says so. Thanks.
I guess weather conditions couldn’t be predicted for the coming 24h.
But they presume to tell us what it will be like in a hundred years...
Would not change anything. Climbers know and accept the risks. Most Search and Rescue teams are climbers themselves. They train and live for the adrenaline rush as much as anyone. What they dislike, are the people that go up with out the skills, equipment, or guides to lead them.
The dirty little secret is that SAR people are all volunteers and have the same exact personality. They utterly love getting the call. When something happens 2 states away or even in another country, they clamor to go. Yes, in public piety they often SAY not to put rescuers at risk by doing such things... but that’s theatrics. On weekends they do the same activities.
They were having discomfort before beginning the run that day. Pure stupidity.

I have spent many years climbing rock and ice and a few mountains too.
No sat phone, no cell phone, you let your friends know when to expect your return.
S&R?
Body recovery in good weather, maybe.
Cranking my body feels good to me, the application of my body to the rock/ice is challenging and exciting.
The summit/top tends to be a denouement.
And if nothing else it feels so good returning to warmth and good food.
An evil car ran me down on my bicycle a few years back, twenty days hospital... That was the end of my climbing.
Our son the teacher had his last class Friday and headed out climbing, to somewhere near Las Vegas, no sat phone, not much cell service... I hope he has good weather.
Some of my friends used to call me an adrenaline junky; I hated that tag. OK, I was also into scuba, skydiving, ski mountaineering...
Looking back, perhaps they were right?
Today, an hour on the rowing machine with my heart rate at 90%; is a fun event, the bicycle rollers at 85%, some say they can be dangerous?
What do you do for fun?
“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. God Himself is not secure, having given man dominion over His works! Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold. Faith alone defends. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.

We were glad when the grandkids arrived she took a terrestrial position.
In a hospital with sick people!!!
Thank you for the Helen Keller quote. I had heard part of it before, and didn’t realize there was more to it.
Hail, freezing rain and gale winds hit the high-altitude race.
What could go wrong
They all looked good, though.
I played 18 yesterday and those hills were brutal.
Quite surprising since she was a communist.

Very much enjoyed reading your post, and glad you didn’t take mine as a personal criticism. It was triggered because years ago a colleague of mine expressed that view regarding some climbers or other adventurers, and it made an impression since the thought had never occurred to me before. More power to you!

Understood. It’s the people you refer to in that last sentence who tend to put others at risk of injury, or worse.
ALMOST HALF A CENTURY AGO, I’M HIKING OUT OF THE GRAND CANYON ON THE BRIGHT ANGEL TRAIL HEADED FOR THE NORTH RIM ON THE KIABOB PLATEAU. I WAS YOUNG, IN GOOD SHAPE, AND WEARING STOUT BOOTS. CAME ACCROSS 2 YOUNG COUPLES WALKING (NOT HIKING) DOWN THE CANYON. NO FOOD. NO WATER. THE GIRLS WERE WEARING HIGH FASHION WHITE PATENT LEATHER ( OR PLASTIC) SANDALS WITH 3/8” THICK SOLES ( ON A TRAIL USED BY DONKEY RIDES!). I TOLD THEN TO TURN BACK, WHICH THE GIRLS WERE ALL FOR, BUT THE GUYS JUST LAUGHED AT ME AND OFF THEY ALL WENT.
NEXT DAY ALL THE TALK WAS ABOUT 2 YOUNG COUPLES THAT HAD TO BE HELICOPTERED OUT. KNEW EXACTLY WHO THEY WERE. MUSTA COST ‘EM A SMALL FORTUNE.
YA JUST GOTTA WONDER.
LIFE IS A RISK FACTOR.
IT ASTONISHES ME HOW FEW PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT.
THE ADRENALINE RUSH GRABS SOME OF US AND THE WORST PART OF OLD AGE IS RECONCILING WITH THE REALITY OF NOT BEING ABLE TO REALLY EXPERIENCE IT ANYMORE.
I ENJOY YOUR POSTS.
KEEP THE FAITH.

That is a fact!!!
Just completed an hour on my bike chasing 90% HR, feels good but intervals to 100% are better but only once a week for me.
For reasons I have yet to determine, multiple runs to 100% make my ankles sore???
Being a young septuagenarian my ankles should not be a problem?
Well, there was the time when a co-worker bet me I could not jump from bollard to bollard in the parking lot!
And they were close at about four feet apart.
Easy-peasy!!! I ran down the row .
Laughing and not exactly paying attention as I jumped off the last one and twisted my ankle, BIG TIME! I turned purple, but only for a week or two.
But I collected!!!

I actually enjoy some of her writing, but she was WAY left.
Some say the leftist slant was the work of her long-time assistant?
I don’t see or hear the folks singing or saying that you can do whatever you put your mind to do, at this time. Very sad event.
