Gaza’s Rockets: A Replenished Arsenal That Vexes Israel
NYT ^

Posted on 05/13/2021 2:44:13 PM PDT by BenLurkin

Hamas, the militant group that has run Gaza since 2007 and does not recognize Israel’s right to exist, has parlayed the arsenal into an increasingly lethal threat, as seen in the most recent upsurge of hostilities with the Israeli military. By Thursday, Israeli officials said, the militants had fired about 1,800 rockets.

Israeli intelligence has estimated that Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other Palestinian militant groups have about 30,000 rockets and mortar projectiles stashed in Gaza.

The number of rockets fired each day in the most recent spate of hostilities is unprecedented. And while the majority of the rockets appear to be aimed at population centers across southern and central Israel, longer-range rockets were launched at Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Qassams, named after the Hamas military wing, which have a range of roughly 10 kilometers and are more easily and cheaply produced than longer-range weapons. They have unpredictable trajectories and some land inside Gaza.

The Oldest Productivity Trick Around ‘The Older Man Was Standing by the Doors and Waiting to Exit the Train’ The arsenal’s medium-range rockets, based on Iranian and Russian design, can reach targets up to 25 miles, making Israeli targets as far as the Tel Aviv suburbs vulnerable. Versions of these weapons are believed to be produced inside Gaza.

The longest-range rockets can travel much farther and can hit Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Ben-Gurion Airport.

Along with providing smuggled weapons and equipment, Iran has been focused on training to help Hamas upgrade local production, extend the range of rockets and improve their accuracy, according to both Palestinian and Israeli officials and experts.

Iran's proxy war against Israel is underway.

Will Israeli air defenses have enough remaining capability to defend against launches coming directly from Iran (if it comes to that)?

Iran supplies the rockets to Hamas, has operatives in place to carefully observe how Iron Dome responds and its capabilities. No doubt they have medium range ballistic missiles positioned in Syria and will fire at Israel if Israel were to overtly attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. Modern stealthy ballistic missiles are not “rockets”.

Israel will either have to drive all Palis out of Gaza, kill all of them or make it a full prison colony.

There really are no other options.

If I was in those policy discussions, I would advocate for driving them all out.

Wipe Gaza out and they wouldn’t have that problem anymore.

I cannot understand why the IDF does not launch massive counter battery fire with its own Katyusha version. Just pound them right back. Without Iron Dome , every one would hit .

and it is the Israeli government in Jerusalem that has sat back for years and years permitting the Muslim terrorist murder gangsters (whether Hamas or Hezballah or PLO) to amass more and more weapons.
Some interdiction, yes, the IDF can do great work.
But not nearly enough interdiction and almost no removal of bombs and missiles already amassed....and everyone has known this for a long time.

After Israel removes the current threats, she needs to be far more active in preventing enemy forces from organizing, operating, or arming anywhere they can (and will) attack from again.

“Will Israeli air defenses have enough remaining capability to defend against launches coming directly from Iran (if it comes to that)?”

They have more than enough.

Hopefully they have enough conventional capability to defend themselves from Iran. Because if they run short of conventional . . .

My son and his family (to include 4 grandchildren) live in Israel, on the side of a large hill, just outside Jerusalem, in the line of target. One came scarily close, but the others were farther away. Both he & his wife are working on their Master’s degrees. This is hair-raising enough for us, not to mention them. However, they are in God’s care and whatever happens they were being obedient to His will. Probably don’t have to mention that lots of prayers are going up!

God be with your son and his family. It’s got to be tough to raise 4 kids, work on their Masters, probably also work and now have to worry about the rockets and family safety.

They cannot do that because Israel has to fight back with its hands tied behind its back. Think of it, it is significantly harder to launch an air strike that takes out one building without much collateral damage, or to send Kidon operatives to covertly take out one target. It would be MUCH easier to just carpet bomb a block or three, which is what Katyusha-type rockets would achieve. However that would raise even greater angst against Israel, and they always try to manage their international reputation. It may not help much, because much of the world is already stratified cleanly into pro and anti Israel. However, the State of Israel tries to do its part. A part that it does very well …precision air strikes, targeted raids with highly trained operatives, and even the Iron Dome system is a modern miracle that just shows how considerate Israel is (even the US wouldn’t just let itself to be bombarded with thousands of rockets and just sit there shooting them from the sky …it would bomb the offending country back to the Stone Age).

So, Israel cannot do a massive counter battery fire since that would play into the hands of Hamas. There is a reason the terrorists position themselves in civilian areas. They expect to be protected since they know Israel doesn’t knowingly target civilians, and in case there is an attack they know the media will stream videos and images of those unfortunate enough to have been caught in the strikes.

So, Israel cannot do that.

Oh, and yes. Without Iron Dome, many of those rockers would have fallen in residential areas in Israel. They are too inaccurate to be used against specific military installations, and thus they are largely aimed at commercial and residential targets. They very type of target Israel is very careful not to target when it strikes back.

God bless Israel.
