Hmmmm...found her in 1 hour...dogs ok? I understand a bear will hide its prey...was her body covered? Other signs of bear hangout besides scat?

Something seems off a bit. Maybe reporting was bad.
Hope they can get to the bottom of this grisly (no pun intended) occurence.

I’ll go with dogs accosted and were barking at bear and woman got between bear and dogs trying to scare it off so it wouldn’t hurt dogs and that’s how she got killed.

Nope. Animals go where you go. We never head into the hills without firearms. Bears, cats, snakes and charging elk abound.

One of the precautions often seen on bear alert precaution signs, bears chase after dogs who run to their masters for safety.

Makes sense. But remember she had to cubs. Never get between the mother and her babies.

Good point. I live about 5 miles from Trimble Hot Springs and know the area well. It’s a beautiful location/area as you well know.

Having a dog with you in bear country is not always a good idea. A sow with cubs will put them up a tree and then go after the dog. Elk, Moose and even deer will attack if they think their little ones are threatened. I don’t care how big or bad azzed you think your dog is a sow with cubs or a boar will shred it and eat it. I was born and raised in the Umatilla National Forest and you never took a dog with you. They’ll get you and themselves in trouble. Here in West Texas we have Javalina’s and they’ll cut a dog to pieces. Even the boy’s who run Hog’s with dog’s won’t let one tangle with a Javi.

I agree. My lab would go after it and all it would do is give me a chance to draw.

Government biologists sometimes write popular myths about bears on websites. Some bears in Colorado are much larger than claimed. A female bear will at least sometimes run away when chased by a man, while her cubs climb a tree. Male bears are more stubborn and potentially very dangerous.

As for dogs, liability dogs aren’t necessary. I’ve seen hounds and bird dogs peck at large bears and chase them away. Wild bear behavior is generally not very unpredictable. Most of them will try to stay out of site, when people come towards them. But when spotted, they are often very stubborn about refusing to move, even with attempts to scare them away with loud noises.

Most bears will run away when shot with any kind of firearm unless hit around the central nervous system, in which case some of them will drop.

That's a possibility.

Most of them will try to stay out of site, even. [Little spelling error fixed there.]

Or two ill-trained big dogs that instead of staying close to the owner, ran forward and went after the bear’s cubs,

I have read similar story's about cougars. Dog goes out and encounters cougar, dog freaks out and runs back to the owner with the cat right behind. Dog owner is kitty chow but the dog gets away.

Guns are your friend, dogs are sometimes helpful.

I read a different source on this incident and it said that the following day authorities shot two more bears. One was a very large male.

Likely. I lit up a 350# boar with a .44 through the boiler room from ~30 yards. He collapsed on the ground, then popped up mad as hell, spun in a circle trying to bit the wound. When he stopped I hit him again. Collapsed, got up and staggered towards the base of the tree I was in. A third round at the base of the neck from above him ended it. It was 20 minutes before I got the nerve to climb down and check him.

Bears attack because sometimes that what bears do.

Most black bear attacks are predatory.
