NB: I, like many of my brethren, make no claims about mental acuity. I’m guessing that “Smart grunt” is an oxymoron and totally against type.
There is a huge body of knowledge,’ stuff Grunts know’. Most of which cannot be discussed on a public forum and never on Sunday.

Is coal AC or DC. A young sober grunt would detect this property in a glance. I’m a septuagenarian and long out of practice. And yes, DC is a no-go, switching it on and off quickly (manually?) might work?
