For years, Sally Struthers's commercials for Save the Children, with their heartbreaking images of children in need, were all over TV.
Struthers revealed Monday on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast that she stopped working as an ambassador for the organization and another, similar one after 35 years because of a terrifying experience. It happened once when she had flown into Uganda on a small plane to meet one of the kids she was sponsoring.
"They brought [the child] from his village, which was quite a few hours away. He had traveled to come meet his sponsor, to meet me, and I made some commercials with him, and I played with him and I brought him toys and balloons," Struthers said. "Well, a roving band of guerrilla warfare guys came out of the bushes and asked [him] where he was from, and he named his village, which was far away, and they decided that we had kidnapped him, and they were going to shoot all of us."

I give her credit for trying to do a good thing.
But, clearly, Africa is a horrible place, and any people who managed to get out and come to America are fortunate and should feel grateful to have the many opportunities provided by our system of laws. Does she agree? Probably not.
She says, about people who joked about her commercials, that people are basically horrible. That’s largely true. Which is why putting those horrible people in charge of the lives of people they don’t even know is a bad idea. Which is to say: socialism is a bad idea. Does she agree? Probably not.
There’s more than one meathead in the world.
I heard a child stole her lunch and fed his entire village with it.Thats what scared her because it took her chefs a full hour to cook her a replacement meal.
I heard the same story.
Seeing meathead, should scare her too.
Sounds like Detroit or Minneapolis.
One could draw conclusions from that.

No matter how well intentioned, Sally Struthers and her bleeding heart supporters have failed.She needed armed escort willing to shoot any guerillas who would interfere. But nope, that does not fit into Sally’sbleeding heart liberal world.

There is a Wondery podcast called ‘Against The Odds’. The first season was ‘Thai Cave Rescue’ of that boys’ soccer team - absolutely fascinating & I highly recommend it. There are many details that you didn’t get from the media, but my comment actually pertains to the second season.
The second season (Kidnapped in the Desert) has been 3 episodes about an American humanitarian aid worker Jessica Buchanan, who was kidnapped in 2011 by Somali land pirates. Seal Team 6 finally went in to rescue her after negotiations were not going anywhere & she became very ill with a life-threatening kidney infection. The podcast details make your point about ‘protection’.
Famine often happens, not due to weather, but due to an inability to protect what you produce from being grabbed by roving bandits. So people stop trying to produce.
Actually, she discovered that all of her pre-conceived notions were wrong. She wanted to be the great White Savior to down-trodden people but instead she was a prop for a get rich quick scheme and the down-trodden people were seeded with expert criminals
Save the Children should have been called %#@* the Children We Need a Cash Cow
Donate heavily to your Missions Fund at your LOCAL church, if the church is missions-minded. (Some aren’t.) There are fewer “middle men” between your money and the native children. Missionaries are embedded in the culture, and are known and (usually) trusted by the indigenous people. They know where the funds are needed most. They don’t do drive-by/fly-in photoshoots. They are reaching souls for Christ.

Any sympathy I felt for her stopped at the end of the above sentence.
If Sally had a brain, after the incident with the child and the guerillas, she would not have been a liberal any longer.
That is sad, and what is even more sad, this tribal thinking is taking place in most urban areas in the US.

These places don’t play by the same rules and will kill you. They likely wanted money also. Very poor places.
