Herd Immunity Is Near, Despite Fauci’s Denial
WSJ ^ | March 24, 2021 6:22 pm ET | By Marty Makary

His estimate that it’ll take a 70% to 85% vaccination rate ignores those who have already been infected.

---------

Anthony Fauci has been saying that the country needs to vaccinate 70% to 85% of the population to reach herd immunity from Covid-19. But he inexplicably ignores natural immunity. If you account for previous infections, herd immunity is likely close at hand.

Data from the California Department of Public Health, released earlier this month, show that while only 8.7% of the state’s population has ever tested positive for Covid-19, at least 38.5% of the population has antibodies against the novel coronavirus. Those numbers are...

The drastic drop in new cases reflects growing herd immunity which should be reached soon.

Our family never had a flu shot, and must have herd immunity. No flu... no Covid. We rarely ever wear masks, and the six foot rule is a joke unless you’re surrounded by sneezing and hacking coughs.

I've been saying that right along. Plenty of children and young adults have already had this.

We need dual testing...Test for Covid and antibodies at the same time.

Long past time for him to go back to being an anonymous bureaucrat none of us ever heard of, since apparently he doesn’t plan to retire anytime soon.

Probably true. But we saw a drastic drop in cases and deaths in the summer of 2020 as well. Came back with a vengeance by the winter. Of all places NY should have a strong herd immunity given the population density and wide spread of the virus early on. But still having problems.

Hopefully a combination of factors will kill this off soon. Spanish flu had at least 3 waves over 3 years but there were no vaccines and poor treatments 100 years ago.

Yes.

Testing for antibodies seems to have gone by the wayside.

Actually immunological science has been ignored throughout this whole Covid debacle.

Came back with a vengeance by the winter

No vaccinations really until January and the steep drop off began early January. 133 million vaccines administered, probably 25% immune, another 50 plus million cases even though only 30 million reported. We are probably over 50% now closing in on 60% and need only 70 for herd immunity, real close.

At this point I’d like to see Fauci trampled by a herd.

Time will tell if the vaccines confer long term immunity. But maybe that won’t be needed if it just buys enough time for the virus to run out of hosts. So far so good. But there is a reason they have to give 2 shots, and talk about a booster shot. I suspect the vaccine makers have some doubts about the lasting effects of these vaccines - which they should since they only have a limited set of data to work with. Hopefully it will last like natural immunity should.

According to the OP, the samples they tested showed roughly 4x more people had antibodies than the reported numbers of infected. So perhaps you (we) have underestimated natural immunity rates.

Yep, who knows, I've seen estimates around 30%

Yes and no. The easiest to find antibodies also disappear quicker. There are several layers to our immunity. And it soon becomes almost impossible to find any antibodies, which is fine. Their job is over, so most of them go away.

Some do stick around for years, but they require highly specialized equipment $$$ to find, and long test protocols $$$.

But our memory cells store the info and can rapidly ramp back up production when needed.

So there’s a certain window to find most of them, measured in weeks. After that it’s very time consuming and expensive to find traces.

Our entire family had it——when I see my liberal in-laws they tell me to wear a mask around my mother in law. I tell them I already had it and “mom” has the vaccine. My sister in law said “You can get it and spread it again”. I said the science says otherwise and if you believe that I can get this virus and then get it again a few months later, then you’re admitting it’s “man made”. So which one is it?

Studies done 9 months after having Covid, 96% had robust anti-bodies and 4% had trace/ample amounts. The “T” cells also go into action quickly as well later on down the road.
However, variants (depending how much it changes) could vary from zero symptoms to cold like symptoms....but we just don’t know enough about the “variants”.
