Big advances in optics technology in the last couple of decades have made giant ground-based telescopes feasible again. The GMT will be built at a fraction of the cost for getting the Webb telescope up and running and have 4 times the resolving power.
Hats off to the folks doing this project (U.S. led consortium). Still an area where there's real science going on.

Guessing that, they use digital correction to compensate for the earth’s atmosphere?
Used to be an airborne telescope mounted in a 747(?) FLYING AT 40,000 FEET.
