The California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife said they used DNA analysis to link the attacks to the animal, which was euthanized and will be tested for rabies. The attacks began last summer in the town of Moraga, which borders Oakland. Five people, two children and three men, were bitten in a 2-mile area in Moraga and neighboring Lafayette.
The searchers laid traps and used coyote urine to lure the aggressive animal. Several other coyotes were caught and euthanized before authorities trapped the target.
The coyote approached and bit people without warning. Last month, it bit a 3-year-old girl as she walked alongside her mother, who was pushing a stroller. The woman said she shouted and waved a blanket at the animal, which retreated only to draw near again before finally running away. The girl suffered three bite wounds.
Authorities believe this coyote lost its fear of humans because people were feeding it, perhaps inadvertently by leaving dog food out.

Who goes walking out on trails without a pistol? A decent knife? Even a .22 is more than enough for coyote. No excuse that 5 people got attacks and none dealt with it.
I don’t think any of the trails are in a wilderness area.

They also let their dogs and cats out. Snack food for the coyotes.
I did a search and they have them like duck decoys. Interesting.
On the parents farm, neighbors have lost dogs to coyotes. One smaller coyote will start playing with the dog and lure them away from the house. Then the pack will jump the dog and kill it.
Reading one of the article further, they talk about using the dogs to chase a coyote until they get worn down and then the hunter catches up and kills it. I guess that would work as long as the dogs outnumber the coyotes. Where the parents are, the coyotes have a den and it would be hard to flush them out for a sole hunter and a couple of dogs.
The coyotes are a real problem. They have killed all the small game and their only predators are hunters. At some point, they run out of things to eat.

Exactly hunting dogs love to hunt.
I have been on many hound hunts for coyotes.
Never seen yotes turn on the dogs and get the better of them.
Wolves at certain times of the year can be hard on a pack.
Most of the time they just run also.
Beau is teaching a younger friend of ours how to call them in. They went out the other night and had six different groups call back to them, but none would come close enough to shoot.
That said, he’s a good coyote hunter - I DO own a coyote hat. ;)
It’s pretty much all they do in the winter months up here. As soon as there’s snow on the ground, they’re all at it; many of them are farmers, too.
What breed of dog do you use? We have Treeing Walker Coon Hounds and Plott Hounds. Two of our Plotts are pretty good coyote dogs, as well as bear dogs.
