Bernal Diaz Del Castillo wrote that Moctezuma threatened to kill Cortez and eat him with Mole' at one of their initial interviews. I gather from this that Mole' was the Aztec's preferred sauce for human flesh.
“Generally, a mole sauce contains a fruit, chili pepper, nut, and such spices as black pepper, cinnamon, or cumin.”
Use a tomato for the fruit and use cumin for a spice, and it sounds a base for chili to me.
