WINDERMERE, Fla. —
Former Major League Baseball player Johnny Damon and his wife were both arrested early Friday in Windermere after a traffic stop.
Damon was charged with driving under the influence and resisting an officer without violence, Orange County Jail records show.
Damon’s wife, Michelle Mangan-Damon, was arrested as well and charged with resisting an officer with violence and battery of a law enforcement officer.
Damon was pulled over around 1:30 a.m. by Windermere police near an entrance to the Isleworth community after an officer said he was seen swerving on Conroy Windermere Road, before striking a curb and a guardrail.
In an arrest report, the officer wrote that Damon was asked how much he’d been drinking and said “just a little bit,” while making a small pinching motion with his fingers.
The arrest report said Damon was “extremely unsteady on his feet” and his speech was “extremely slurred.”
While police were speaking with Damon, they said his wife got out of the car, despite officers' orders to stay inside. When the officer tried to push her against the car Mangan-Damon turned around and pushed the officer. As she did this, police said Damon stepped between them and a fight ensued.
During the struggle, Mangan-Damon broke away and walked toward the community guardhouse near where the stop occurred. A second officer on the scene took her into custody.
The report said the officer then asked Damon if he would perform a field sobriety test, to which Damon said multiple times that he would because he is “a big boy.”
Police said that after Damon had been arrested he consented to taking a breathalyzer test. The first time he blew a .300, and the second time he blew a .294. That is nearly four times the legal limit in the state of Florida.
Damon was a baseball standout at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando and went on to play in the major leagues for seven different teams. He was a key member of the 2004 Boston Red Sox World Series championship team.
I agree. And the problem is that “mistakes” are forgiven. People get three or four DUIs before going to prison. How many people are dead and maimed by 3rd or fourth offendeders?
Orlando sort of sucks. Not apologizing for this offender - a ballplayer I never really liked, but why is this news?
I’m sure there are plenty who cannot live where they patrol. Beverly Hills for example. Potomac Md., Bethesda Md., N.W. D.C., as a few more examples. There are plenty more wealthy enclaves such as them in every state.
Same logic they use for gun magazine capacity.
did you hear the one about the rabbi, the freeper and and the ball player that went to jail? .....
LOL
Another drunk and a crazy woman off the streets. 👍🏻
What does that mean?
The jails would be 85% empty if people could get 15 seconds of their life back.
Why does the woman have to fight the cop? Like Johnny is gonna defend her? She wasn’t even driving. Must be hot headed. I’ll bet the sex is great. It’ll be different in jail-heh heh.
"Resisting an officer without violence" is a new one on me.
Maybe he pulled the "Do you know who I am" card.
Reducing the BAC means more casual drinkers will suddenly be above the limit, hence more $$$ for the arresting municipality.
“..who all weekend constantly screamed for his lawyer.”
I’ve done jobs at prisons and it was crazy how loud they are with guys yelling all the time it seems. Was at Riker’s Island for a week and it must have been the same guy yelling his head off ALL the time - ALL day. It was really hard to concentrate on the job.
Major league intoxicated.
“Call it a night, get an Uber and get the car the next day..”
Yeah, except I’m not thinking straight by that time...
What I do is take an Uber TO the bar while I’m still thinking straight - then I have no choice going home. Also, no car to pick up!
It’s not supposed to be an overnight stay at a country club.
What did he expect?
843.02 Resisting officer without violence to his or her person.—Whoever shall resist, obstruct, or oppose any officer as defined in s. 943.10(1), (2), (3), (6), (7), (8), or (9); member of the Florida Commission on Offender Review or any administrative aide or supervisor employed by the commission; county probation officer; parole and probation supervisor; personnel or representative of the Department of Law Enforcement; or other person legally authorized to execute process in the execution of legal process or in the lawful execution of any legal duty, without offering or doing violence to the person of the officer, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.
Beverly Hills PD officers do get paid well...However, I really doubt that an officer could buy a house in Beverly Hills on a cop's salary...Renting a house or an apartment...That's a different story...
I hope the couple learned the "lesson"...
By the way, Johnny Damon did support President Trump in 2016...I don't know if he supported him last year...
I watched a movie where they took people from all walks of life, including a judge who had presided over many DUI cases and a man with multiple DUI convictions. They put them all through a driving test, gave them drinks until they blew a .1 then had them take the test again. It was pretty eye opening. Needless to say, the second test was a disaster. But guess who did the best the second time around? The habitual drunk driver. In his own bizarre way I guess practice makes perfect.
Even better!
