Similar thing here, only it was my wife. In the 80s she worked as a nurse for USAID at a remote “hospital” in Africa, really just a small out-patient clinic. One day she shattered her ankle playing volleyball with other USAID employees. Then, yes, was pulled in an oxcart for 12 hours over some extremely rough jungle paths, in excruciating pain. If she hadn’t been a USAID employee she would’ve lost her foot, and maybe her life. When it acts up she still walks with a very bad limp.
