Cicely Tyson, the pioneering Honorary Oscar winner who starred in Sounder and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and earned five Emmy noms for her recurring role on How to Get Away with Murder, died today. She was 94.

Her manager Larry Thompson confirmed the news by did not provide details of her death.

“I have managed Miss Tyson’s career for over 40 years, and each year was a privilege and blessing,” Thompson said in a statement. “Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life. Today she placed the last ornament, a Star, on top of the tree.”

Tyson racked up 16 career Emmy nominations and won three, including two in 1974 for her legendary turn in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, in which she played a Southern woman who was born into slavery and lives to join the civil rights movement.

R.I.P. Ms. Tyson. I'm sure we'll count this as a COVID death.

Yes. If I had to guess, I would have guessed she was in her mid-70s.

During her most famous period 70’s and early 80’s, it was never quite clear what her exact age was. Cicely was from the old school of theater, in her belief that the fans don’t need to know every single thing about you. There should always be some air of mystery or the exotic about a movie star.

The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman

One of the best films ever made, and certainly the best one made on slavery and its aftermath. Eschewed cartoonish portrayals in black and white. So real it seemed like a documentary to me when I first saw it as a child.

Me too. But Miles Davis, one of her husbands? I think? Was born in 1925, close to her birthdate.

[Hank Aaron]

Always seemed like a classy guy in public, at least. I really didn’t know much about him.
