I can’t fault someone for trusting for the first 30-90 days of his Presidency that there was some secret “plan” to clean up DC. But it should have become quickly obvious that Sessions was an empty suit who could barely speak in public without sounding like a second grader trying sound out words.

Brought a knife fighter to a knife fight. He’s a brawler, and God bless him for it. But the notion of 4D chess, plans within plans, etc. was always nonsense. It was all improvised. People who believed, and alas some who still believe, that magical executive orders, insurrection act, martial law, the kraken, etc vanquish our foes have been delusional.
The swamp is like Nancy Pelosi: Cunning and ruthless, but not smart. Their impulses run to the aggregation of power, guided by their insufferable self-righteousness. That’s it. The witnesses at the first impeachment personified this article and trait. Their consciences told them that the Russia hoax was the right thing to do. I’m sure there are people in the swamp engaged in pedophilia and other crimes, but that’s true of the general population as well, and it’s not their motivation in doing the things they do.
I hoped as much as anyone that Trump could drain the swamp. Now I think the effort was always doomed: first, as I said, the administration was largely improvised.
