VANITY--Windows 10 Ver 2004 Tries to Zot Brave Browser Download
Posted on 01/14/2021 4:23:56 AM PST by AbolishCSEU
One of my laptops running W10 that updated to ver 2004 tried to label the Brave browser download as "potentially harmful." Just a heads up, however this may be old news as I delay windows updates in general. Have not gone to 20H2. I am in IT by trade and also run Linux (especially on rpi4s)
Folks that are unfamiliar or less savvy may be prevented from installing Brave because of it.

That’s odd. I simply went to the Brave.com page and clicked on the download/install button and I’m now using Brave.

I did with ver 1909. Smooth sailing. 2004 got the message that it might be harmful.

More info: this occurred within Edge browser (I will be keeping a copy of the download on my NAS for now). Not sure if the 2004 ver has any change log on the Edge Browser but it is reminiscent of IE 11 and before.
This behavior would only occur in IE if you were downloading something like Jellybean’s keyfinder and the like which was deemed as “hackers tools.”

Downloaded Dissenter without issue on my Win10 desktop (version unknown). Of course, my desktop died a year back and the Chicano repair shop that fixed it and reloaded Win10 loaded who knows what for the Win10 updating system. At least it’s the English version of Win10, and not the Spanish version.

It is probably just a matter of time before consumer grade computers will refuse to run banned application and instead report them. You will need a hacked OS or linux. Then the race will be on to detect and report those and block them from the internet.

Fortunately, too many businesses run old legacy apps that require not only Linux, but older versions of other OSes. My last employer (as far as I know) is still using Novell Netware on hundreds of stations, and a couple of image storing servers running Solaris 9.
Eventually, certain types on communication might have to be done using non-TCP/IP or using a TCP/IP wrapper around other protocols. Maybe it is time to revive Banyan Vines.

sounds like the settings for downloading were changed during the update. MS is not as bad as apple, but still for security most of the unwashed should use the windows store. the setting will let you download with out warning, with a warning or only from the store.

Did you download from brave.com?
There’s lots of places that show up on a search for “brave browser download”, some of whom may be trying to get you to download malware.

Maybe you are in California where it can seem most everything is labeled as “potentially harmful.”

That said..., any browser that assumes you will only have less thanm 25 tabs open at once, and does not allow for multiple tab rows, and making each tab a different color, and enabling ctrl+tab to switch btwn the most recently accessed tabs, and to open new urls and or searches in new tabs at the end of the tab rows - all of
Firefox ESR (legacy) enables (with extensions) for superior functionality is a deficient browser, although for security purposes they are to be preferred over legacy browsers. The solution for power users is to use more than one browser, with each having its own basic purpose. Thank God we can have such options and tools.

Slightly OT but I have noticed that Symantec has started alerting me with a “Malicious Domain Request” on a link that I have accessed for a couple of years. This is only occurring if I try the link through the Brave browser. If I attempt it using Pale Moon it opens normally.
Could it be your anti-virus program that is asserting itself?

Hi upchuck, thanks for the ping.
I suspect this is a matter of accidentally downloading from the wrong site. I've downloaded and installed Brave to every platform I have (a few each of different versions of Win10, MacOS, Linux) with no problems.
To reproduce the warning, we'll need:
- Operating system version and patch state
- What browser was used to download, and its version
- The full URL it was downloaded from
- Which button, link etc. was clicked to download it
