I think you and others (and at times, I myself) are feeling nostalgia for a time long ago when it seemed leftists were misguided, but (often) well meaning, as opposed to deranged or outright evil.

When this happens I usually mentally kick myself and remember that I was younger and more naive then, and in an environment where they felt they had to conceal their evil.
