When I first saw it Wednesday, December 16 the conjunction was more spectacular because I was out in the desert. Jupiter and Saturn were directly above the waxing crescent moon and all 3 were hanging over a huge saguaro cactus which was back-lit by the glow of Phoenix 20 miles to the west. All around on both side of me the horizon was jagged blackness made by the peaks of the Superstition Mountains on my left and the McDowell Mountains on my right.
