And, who allowed the Gendarmes to be equipped with firearms? --------- The Gendarmes are part of the French military and are armed. However, Paris has its own police force who are not Gendarmes. Police ≠ Gendarmes in France, although policing in most of the nation is handled by the Gendarmes.
