The interesting thing is that REI was founded as a member's co-op in the late 50's by Seattle area hikers and climbers. There were little or no places to buy hiking and climbing gear. The original Eddie Bauer was the only expedition provisioner in the area. And the prices were high.
Now both have become "elite" and very brand driven, a far cry from the co-op of old (which I was once a member)
True fact: REI in other contexts means “Real Estate Investment.” I think the stores are named after the fact you need to get a mortgage to buy anything.
