Petco has stopped selling shock collars and it’s calling on others in the pet industry to follow its lead.
The San Diego, California-based pet supply retailer announced on Tuesday that it had stopped selling all electronic shock collars, including both human- and bark-activated models.
Petco CEO Ron Coughlin said in the announcement that shock collars “have been shown to increase fear, anxiety and stress in dogs.”

I figured PETA had these banned years ago.
One of my favorite stories was when I was in high school and had a weekend job at an answering service. These were with the old fashioned cordboards (remember Lily Tomlin on Laugh-In?) and one of their clients ran an ad in a hunting magazine for a “bark collar”. The battery-powered collar gave off a small shock to the nexk whenever the dog barked and it was meant to train the dog not to bark unless they had a damn good reason to.
The ad had an 800 number and, after hours, it rang my switchboard. The only info I had about this was the text included in the tiny magazine ad.
One night, the line rings. A fellow asks me a question:
“Will this work on my cougar?”
I asked why he wanted this for his cougar. He says it’s because the cougar keeps pulling down his drapes.
Being a smart-ass high school kid I replied, “Well, if your cougar barks like a dog when in pulls down your drapes, this should work for you but, if it doesn’t, I wouldn’t recommend this product.”
The customer thanked me and hung up. Later, I was reprimanded for “talking smart” to customers.
Don’t forget trash bags.
My cats take off running whenever I change a trash bag.
Guess their logic is that ANYTHING that goes in the bag ‘ain’t never seen again’ and the bag goes out the door never to be seen again.
Makes sense....
And fireworks.
I’ve had mixed results with shock collars. Sometimes they don’t work through a lot of fur on a stubborn dog. The shock level is adjustable and I’ve used it on myself first before putting them on dogs. It’s not bad. A low level works on many dogs.
Other times it just takes one or two times with the shock then after that the beep is plenty good enough.
I think it’s ignorant to take these off the market but the store is within its rights to do so. Encouraging other stores to do the same thing is a dick move though.
There is an electronic sound device I’ve been thinking about trying to get dogs to stop pulling on the leash. It’s supposed to be quite annoying to dogs with their better hearing than humans.

Give them ‘credit’ on two points.
They didn’t say ‘effective NOV 2025’ we will stop selling them and didn’t say ‘if THEY stop, we will stop’.
My my, how we have changed I grew up and dogs had ‘freedom’ took a crap in anothers yard or field, neighbors dog/cat did the same etc
I just saw a Judge Judy rerun where a guy sued his neighbor (AND WON) because the neighbors dog kept peeing in/on his lawn and JJ Surmised that the dog was leaving a calling card thereby inviting other dogs to ‘check it out’ and the neighbor had to pay to reseed and sod etc etc.
Like we say, if the modern day Martians land and observe ‘you’ walking your dog and cleaning up after them, why would anyone dispute who is REALLY in ‘charge’?
I guess this nixes electronic fences. Better to have the dog run into the road and get squashed. /s

Shock collars work. My Silki and Yorki run into the woods and Could be eaten by a raccoon or coyote.

Very amusing. Your employer probably didn’t like you saying that you would not recommend their product. Otherwise it made sense, at least for a teenager. I was in my teens when I learned the joys of Sarcasm.
Thats ridiculous. Collrs for wireless invisible fence is the best thing I ever bought for my dogs. They are ALWAYS at home now and not out getting into neighbors trash or barking at people sitting in tree stands.
Incidentally, I live in zip code E-I-E-I-O. AND wouldnt want to live anywhere else!
