Do you really think that if they did in fact launch a missile at AF-1, that they would tell the crew that?

If I was the derp in charge of this possible scenario, I would say something like incoming Chinese/NK/Russian bombers or whatnot.

Who do you think would be operating the air search radar? The fire control? Do you think the Missile Techs might notice a missing missile?

Do you think the CO would try to shoot without going to General Quarters? Everyone in radio would know whether or not a change of DEFCON status or any other message came in. Without that, the incoming Chinese/NK/Russian bombers or whatnot story wouldn't wash.

Bottom line:

A missile was launched while AF-1 was in the vicinity.

They told us it was a helicopter.

Can't argue with those facts.
