Statement Regarding Deputation of State and Local Law Enforcement Officers
justice.gov ^ | September 30, 2020 | U.S. Attorney’s Office District of Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore.— Billy J. Williams, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, and Russ Burger, U.S. Marshal for the District of Oregon, provide the below statement on ongoing violence in Portland:

The U.S. Marshal will not cancel the cross-deputation of local and state law enforcement officers.  Law enforcement and law-abiding citizens of Portland have endured months of nightly criminal violence and destruction.  Officers have been repeatedly assaulted with bottles, bats, sledgehammers, lasers, rocks, and other weapons of convenience.  In addition, the public has seen repeated efforts by criminals to burn down public buildings.  These violent, senseless, and criminal acts have no bearing on social justice.  They only serve to exacerbate lawlessness in this city.  Federal cross-deputation of Oregon State Police, Multnomah County Sheriff and Portland Police Bureau personnel underscores the importance of providing accountability and deterrence for these criminal acts.  Importantly, the federal deputation supports front line law enforcement officers and their families in a way that they have not seen from City Hall.  Portlanders, and Oregonians in general are sick of the boarded-up and dangerous conditions prevalent in downtown Portland due to a lack of leadership.  We call upon citizens of this city and state to denounce violence, demand accountability, and work together to end the violence.

First part of first sentence.
“The U.S. Marshal will not cancel the cross-deputation...”

Arrest the rioters and let the U.S. Attorney press charges and place these criminal insurgent rioters in federal prison for a long time. LOL

Deputize more of them. Hell, start deputizing private citizens.

Actually, you are incorrect. Comment from the other thread about this. Poster knows whereof he speaks. Plus on other threads, there is much info about rioters previously arrested with “catch and release” have been arrested by the feds with heavier charges and real justice starting to grind.

In fact last I read (at least a month ago) on the DoJ spox twitter that 300 rioters had been arrested on federal charges with many more being investigated. I haven’t had time to check on this lately as I was under evac. orders from a huge arson fire, one of the many on the west coast. Now fire is contained so I have more time to check news.

Inasmuch as I was once (long ago) “double sworn” as both a State peace officer & a Special Deputy US Marshal, let me answer that question:

The Special Deputation means that the “double-sworn” Portland officers can enforce BOTH Oregon & US federal laws.
It also means that the US Attorney will PROSECUTE violators, rather than the local District Attorney, IF there is any violation of federal criminal statutes.
AND
Tthe violators will be indicted/tried/sentenced in the US District Court.
(Trials in a US District Court have an over 90% rate of conviction AND the sentences levied upon conviction are generally FAR more harsh, than the sentence is in State/local courts.)

BAD NEWS for the RIOTERS, ARSONISTS, LOOTERS (& anyone else, who has a FEDERAL WARRANT out for their arrest): You will be indicted/tried in the US District Court & facing a US District Judge, who won’t care what the Portland Mayor wants..

Yours, TMN78247
